The Friends of the Kirklees Light Railway will be holding their 8th Annual Steam Gala over the weekend of the 14th and 15th September 2013. The event which is entitled There’s a Storm Brewing will feature a number of visiting engines all of which have connections with a stormy weather theme.

The cast of visiting engines includes (all subject to availability)

RH&DR No. 7 Typhoon from the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway
BVR No. 8 Thunder from the Bure Valley Railway

There may be even one or two surprises too.

The visiting engines will operate alongside the Kirklees Light Railways own fleet of steam and diesel locomotives.

The weekend will feature an intensive timetable including half hourly full line trains, an hourly shuttle service from Clayton West and a half hourly shuttle service operating from Shelley. In addition to the trains there will be a photographic display and a collection of vintage and classic vehicles.

Passenger services will commence at 10:00 on both days, Saturday will feature an evening train operating one return trip and departing Clayton West at 20:00. As it has become a tradition at these events, “Shelley or Bust” final departure on Sunday at 17:00 will feature as many of the locomotives as possible.

Stuart Ross of the Kirklees Light Railway said “We are all very excited about this year’s event. Typhoon and its sister engines at the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway are some of the most iconic miniature locomotives ever built and are known throughout the world. They were designed to be models of the most state of the art locomotives in the 1920s which was of course, Flying Scotsman. To have one visit us is a real privilege. Equally impressive will be Thunder which will be one of the largest and most powerful engines to ever run on the railway.

Proof, once again, that miniature railways often have the most fun...
