An Evening with the Night Mail

On Saturday 19th October the Nene Valley Railway will offer unique opportunities with 73050 ‘City of Peterborough’ on the travelling post office rake for photographers.

Photographers will need to be at Wansford at 16.00 and meet at Wansford before departing on the TPO to Sutton Cross.

There will be photographic opportunities on the TPO to and from Sutton Cross and also from the line side during a number of mail exchanges. Evening light to dusk, steam traction and the TPO in action should produce some very atmospheric and unique photo opportunities.

After dark we will return to Wansford on the TPO where the loco will be turned and serviced . A complementary meal will be provided for photographers in the café.

A number of night time photo opportunities will then take place at Wansford involving 73050, the TPO set and mail being loaded and sorted by postal staff with hopefully a royal mail road vehicle on the platform.

This will be the last chance to see the TPO rake at its current length as stowage coach 80402 is to be withdrawn following this event pending overhaul.

The TPO photo shoot costs £32 and includes the meal. Places are limited to 25.

For more information or queries please email info@nightmail.org.uk or feel free to ask on here.

Booking is being handled by The Night Mail Project. Please follow the link to book. http://www.nightmail.org.uk/news/nightshoot

    Hi Tony,

I've checked and been told that the loco dept are happy to run her for the evening without plates. So yes, assuming the demand is there we'll run the charter without the nameplates.

Just to confirm this now properly.

Yes, 73050 will run without her name plates for the evening, so it will be a rare chance to photograph her simply as 73050.

Sounds a great evening - is there any idea what time it would run until?

    We should finish by 9pm.

We'll have around an hour and a half at the lineside timed to coincide with sunset doing a number of drops at different speeds/lights/variations etc. Then on return to Wansford around a similar amount of time photographing the train in the platform with certain cameo's (With around a half hour break to eat/turn the loco/fine tune the lighting on the platform in between the two).

Of course there'd be nothing stopping participants coming down earlier in the day when we're putting on mail drops for the general public and getting a few more photographs in daylight/on the train. I'm not sure whether we'll have steam/diesel or a mixture during the day yet though.

Just to say the event is now filling up nicely and we've got just 6 places left.

We're also running the TPO set during the day and tickets for the evening session will enable photographers to travel on these to get additional daylight and on train shots.

As they say, book now to avoid disappointment!
