I'm seriously thinking about that 75th anniversary special.

Now that's a slightly provocative comment! Probably true though, although I'd be very surprised if you saw 35028 in any different colour. That said an unrebuilt blue MN looked ok.

TBH, I think BR blue would suit anything... What about, say, 1744?

I was just looking at that run and the wife seemed quite keen too until we started working out the travel details from Portsmouth, Premier Dining (Can only really do a trip of this magnitude in PD) and she wanted a table for 2 instead of 4 etc and it came to just under a £1000 so will have to give it a miss. Now if only I was a millionaire lol.......

    Thanks for your advice.
Yeah, doing a trip of this magnitude+air fare+ places to stay and spending money for my dad and I(we normally do coach fare though). It is going to be a bunch of number crunching since we also would like to do the Shakespeare Express with 5043 as well.

Well first off don't fly to London, Direct to Manchester is a better bet, Delta, AA and other US airline fly there. You are then in a better place to join the train at Crewe, and afer that get to Birmignham for the Shakespears.

A flight on a tuesday with a saturday night stay over is usually the cheapest bet. American is probably your best bet locally to Fort Worth...though not the cheapest.

If you dont mind a connection in Newark, NJ.. United has pretty much scattergunned the UK when it comes to regional flights... in a 3 hour window in the evening there's a flight to nearly every UK major airport... you could do an "open jaw".. that is fly into Manchester and Return from Birmingham. Dont get your hopes up when it comes to quality British hotels..save your money and go for B&B.. quality is about the same, price is a lot less. If you want "Sheraton" or "Marriott" quality.. there are some but don't believe in the British chains at the same price.

I have done some price crunching with the Airlines too and British Airways actually had the best deals. I would not be flying into London. Once I heard about the Manchester airport, I knew right away that would be the best way to get to the Cumbrian Mountains.

If you want any advice there are quite a few of us who live within 30 miles of Manchester, Note we do use Miles here, many Americans think we are on Kilometers...

The North Eastern trip from Sheffield to Newcastle looks interesting. Just a case of whether I can afford £80 is a matter of fact.

Yes plenty of loops especially on the return, where amongst other things freight as well as fast passenger has to be taken into account.

However to take an example (based on RTT) I don't think it is necessary to go into Penrith loop on the outward run. This is for 1S45 to pass. The Duchess is allowed a relatively easy 58 minutes (10.23 to 11.21) to reach Penrith S Jc from the restart at Carnforth (44 miles) presumably taking into account the very slow approach to the Jct. If it ran non stop through Penrith another 20 minutes for the 19 miles from there to Carlisle would be easily attainable and would give a Carlisle arrival 5 mins before 1S45. In fact not having to slow for the loop would mean an earlier passing time at Penrith S Jc anyway. I can't see a problem with platform availability at Carlisle and the only freight on the scene is a 10.52 from Harrisons Sidings due to pass Penrith at 11.04, Carlisle at 11.25 - well out of the way.

There is certainly precedent for such timings and I think margins and indeed they have been exceeded in the past. So why the apparent inconsistency?

Please tell me if I'm wrong.

I can think of 2 reasons - (1) possible water stop if needed (2) pathing stop for possible late running of WCML service(s). Although some drivers will seek to gain time, others might simply hold to time and these factors need to be covered in the timetable whether steam, diesel or electric traction.

40 minutes at Carnforth will be the water stop and on other northbound runs once leaving Carnforth a through run to Carlisle is the norm.
