I see times are in RTT now:
    Outward: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U53305/2013/09/14/advanced
    Return: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U53311/2013/09/14/advanced

Tornado is in charge, and should make a good noise climbing Snow Hill bank about 6:30 pm

Sorry but where do you get Snow Hill from ?, train bypasses it on those timings.

Also those outward timings through New St look odd to me, as that's the opposite direction to what steam has been through normally, can you coast under the roof in the uphill direction ?.

Old Hill would make more sense.

I'm still not convinced that routing via New St will happen in the event in that direction, the return journey routed via Perry Barr would make more sense on the outward leg, I just can't see how you can coast from the east to the west end at New Street with the 10MPH restriction against the gradient.

The proposed path via New Street is just asking for trouble I believe.

According to RTT the trailing load is 715 tonnes, so presumably there is a diesel in the consist. Should be able to give it a shove through New Street.

I don't think the trailing lenghts quoted on RTT etc accurately reflect the train load, its just an arbitury number used for timing purposes.

Yes, Old Hill is what I meant - getting confused again.

On the assumption that a diesel will be in the consist for the outward run, does this have potential (negative) implications for the run up Old Hill on return?

    That remains to be seen.

If the railhead is dry, and the timing isn't too tight, Tornado can probably lift 11/12 coaches and a DL up the hill. She has done that sort of thing before, and so have the Duchess and Clan Line; I have a wonderful shot of 35028 lifting 13 coaches and a dead 66 up Parkstone bank from a cold start at Poole. The saftey valves lifted 200 yards short of Branksome station!

If it's wet and/or they are running late, the DL will probably need to assist.

It helps if you can get a run at the bank, but is easier said than done with regular traffic during the day, 5043 has been up with 10 and the water carrier, but was doing 50 through Cradley Heath, didn't think you could approach the bank at such a speed with the curvature, but was expertly judged.

Tornado thru' Berhamsted on time absolutely effortless with it's big train. She is an impressive machine. Weather dreadful but it made for some very atmospheric effects. I always think if the weather's going to be bad I want it REALLY bad.

I see they stuck a Class 66 on the back for the climb through Old Hill.
