entry charges, then they could afford to restore something :) actualy if the charge was made to restore an NRM engine such as Hamilton, to the main line at say Tysley, complete with bath casing, and the entrance fee went towards this, how many would object , then over time other suitable engines could be restored using this formula, theres enough preserved railway workshops who have the skills these days to tackle most things.
How would i kick start it, get together all the surviving LMS pacifics, they are all in this country,so no expensive movement costs, i would swop 5000 for city of Birmingham, to enable her to be part of the line up, charge an admission fee but have all proceeds to go towards putting the flying bathtub back on the main line, her place at York can be taken by City of Birmingham , whist she is being restored.

4 VEP, being mk1 based with all those doors and crash pillars, would be a lot of work, and as they dont have normal buckeyes between coaches very hard to store, as you would have to keep it as a unit, then where can you use it? it would need all the other modern add ons if it was to ever work under its own power . i for one would love to see preserved electric units allowed on NR, but know it will not be possible without a lot of modern systems, that would be very expensive to install, the 2 bill and 4 sub, when active were interesting.
Iagree about wagons, all to many My railway included neglect our wagon fleets ,they only come in for attension when we can fit them in,, then have to be repaired, so very often what starts out as a look over to check they are acually usable, ends up being more work that takes people away from other jobs.

Does the NRM have any restored loco hauled typical Mk1's ? If not this is a glaring gap in the collection. Can't find any on their website - just a tatty looking suburban.

They do (ignoring the support coaches that is) and that is at Shildon but I bet you will be surprised at the livery! - http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=2923 Ok I admit it's not so much restored but kept in its received good condition but that would be closest to fitting the bill!!!

Thanks - no objection to the livery since it is authentic and, as you say, well kept.

Martin, we have a DTC from a 4 VEP and my plan is for it to be in the Great Hall within 5 years.

will you be going for the original overall blue, or a later livery, i think the NSE livery was about the best , cetainly better than the drab rail blue.

I agree that some carriages and waggons should be in the restoration queue.......but then perhaps I should admit to a (slight) vested interest.
As always, I suspect that funding *could* be an issue.
Waggons, carriages and vans are more likely to fit in our workshop........and we're not boiler makers !

Connex South Central as withdrawn is my plan, we don't have enough from the privatised railway. The 2HAP will be the NSE livery in the collection.

4DD - the UK's only attempt at double deck passenger trains
There are two 4DD vehicles remaining, one at Sellinge in Kent, the other at Northamptonshire Ironstone Trust

E4, J17 or J69. I believe that it is unlikely as they were reverse engineered to look like earlier iterations of their class, in such a way that would make that very difficult. Nevertheless the E4 would be an example of, what is now, a rare wheel arrangement, J69 could be part of a festival of London suburban rail services based jointly at Epping Ongar and NNR (I think their next vintage coach in the restoration queue is a GER suburban). I imagine it would be great for a preserved railway. Small, a tank and it must be reasonably powerful also. The J17 is the nearest we'll get (for a while) to a Claude. I guess I'm biased and these will never make their money back, as they won't be mainline crowd pullers but it would be lovely to see a bit more Eastern variety

A bold decision but of course history did not stop with the demise of BR.
