We aren't allowed to sell tickets for the gravity trains, sorry about that.

Not very likely as even on quieter days the load would be too great. I understand, however, that options for giving the loco more work are being investigated.

It was being shown at Harbour Station over the '1863 and All That!' weekend and the bits that I saw were very tempting. Very tempting indeed!

I know what I'm having for Christmas...

The DP went a little over the top. We have no plans to rebuild or operate it ourselves, but we would support 100% any bid to reinstate it. Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM is very keen that the line be reopened. Next stage is in the Government's hands - a feasibility study. Benefits to locals is very much on the agenda - up to ten buses an hour run between the two towns, so there is clearly a demand. Much of the trackbed is intact and there is room at Caernarfon for either a joint station or two adjacent ones. Extending the WHR through the tunnel would be less disruptive than running SG down to the existing WHR station.

I was interviewed by BBC Radio Wales about it this morning and ITV1 Wales is running another i/v in the evening news next Thursday.

    Andrew,
Out of interest how feasible would it be to reopen the line right through to Pwllheli?

Doesn't some A road use the formation in part ? I remember traveling along such a road in the area with what appeared to be a trackbed alongside for some distance, and Caenarfon - Afon Wen is the only likely contender in the area.

Edit: The A487 from Porthmadog - Caernafon round the western side of Snowdonia looks the prime suspect.

Thanks Andrew. Much as we love railways I can't help thinking that 10 buses an hour might be preferable to one train (if that).

Yes, I read up on that and spotted that problem. Doesn't answer my question though!

Afon Wen might be nice, but the only justification would be as an alternative North-South route involving the upgrading of the Cambrian (with the probable need to demolish and rebuild Barmouth Bridge) and the restoration of Aberystwyth-Camarthen. It would still take a hell of a long time to get there. Building a new line on the route of the never-completed Manchester and Milford would be much better.

The trackbed down that ways is just as built on now, Llanidloes is a bypass, Moat Lane a scrapyard, the A470 uses quite a bit of the M&M trackbed round Tywlch....
