My footage of 5043 'Earl Of Mount Edgcumbe' on yesterday's Welsh Marches trip, seen at Kidderminster, Abergavenny (blistering performance by the way!) and Hereford.

Excellent run yesterday with 5043 on the Vintage Trains Welsh Marches trip. The engine was in its usual immaculate form, with Mr Churchill on the regulator. Highlights were the 120 miles non-stop from Droitwich to Hereford via Worcester, Gloucester, Severn Tunnel Jn and Abergavenny, much of it covered at 70-75 mph. Llanvihangel Bank was topped at 53mph on about half regulator and 40% cut-off, so there was probably still more in hand. On the return non-stop from Hereford, arrival outside Wolverhampton was nearly 15min early. After waiting right time at Wolverhampton the train was diverted to run directly to New St via Dudley Port because of OLE problems on the booked route via Bescot and Perry Barr. Arrival back at Tyseley was over 30min early.

A big thank you is due to 'The Twirlies' who turn up and turn out these machines as if they'd just come out of the works. Only two of them are ex railwaymen the rest are like me.........enthusiasts who take pride in what they do. These guys rarely go out on trips, but it doesn't stop them from taking pride in turning out the loco's in as near perfect condition as possible.
Because these men are climbing all over the Loco's at the end of each trip, if they notice something not quite right they'll let Alistair know and he'll check it out. It just goes to show that there's no such thing nowadays as being "just a cleaner" or an engineer.
And it isn't only at Tyseley, look at pics and videos of all our mainline loco's out and about and then ask yourself "how do they do that?".

Well said. There is a view by some that ultra clean engines are not all that authentic and those that might use car wax to get the sparkle can be scorned upon. But as you say, paying that much attention does increase the possibility that something minor might be picked up early especially if it's combined with a 'debrief' by the crew about how the loco has performed. I know of an instance when a loco was working over two consecutive days and mention was made of one of the injectors not always picking up well. Overnight the injector was stripped down, checked and reassembled for day 2. It's examples like that that illustrate the difference between the best and the rest.

I wonder when the last steam hauled train ran between Wolverhampton High Level & Birmingham New Street via Dudley Port , anyone know??

I'd like to know that too - i'd imagine some time before 1968 though! I know that steam operated in the Wolverhampton area with new station and OHLE, but unsure whether operations were just confined to the line curving off towards Walsall, and north towards Stafford.

Sounded great coming through Cosford in the evening - from the videos i've seen, it almost seems as if you could tag another 4-5 coaches behind 5043 and it wouldnt even notice!

As mentioned earlier, there has been steam over the whole of the route between Wolves and New Street in preservation, but not all in one go.

So folks...do we run this one again?

And if so, would you go on it?

120+ miles of non-stop running from Droitwich GL to Hereford with REG the Water Carrier.

    Cheers!

    Ben
