Going a little off the original thread, Andrew Barclay built a special batch of 7 large 0-4-0sts, for the Fife area of NCB
    locos known as Fife Flyers.
    5 of the 7 still exist, 2259, 2260, 2261, 2262& 2292. only 2261 is in use at Ribble Steam Railway, 2257 & 2357 having been scrapped.

    Therefore, AB 2258,2259,2260,2261 & 2262 exist.
Tiny at KWVR no 2258 is preserved but is a much smaller AB

Small Prairie 5540 would have given a run of five consecutively-numbered locos (5538-5542) if it survived as would 35026 "Lamport and Holt Line" (35025-9)

And perhaps more importantly they are rather useful which is why all the survivors have steamed in the preservation era and during next year 6 should be in service!

I can't help thinking that there is a loose parallel between the fate of some of the MNs & what currently seems to be happening in SA on another thread.

Now Riley's havce been awared the contract to compete the repairs to Fluing Scotsman, I wonder if this means that 35009 will slip further down the resoration queue??

It depends on how full Riley's books are, plus as he will be moving premises at some stage that is sure to have an impact, would he want to pull out the stops to get all current contract jobs out the way before the upheaval or has he got flexibility built in i think you have to look at the timespans of his current work then see how 35009 fits in to it.

Unless it's going on the main line, a MN is probably not an ideal loco for a preserved line unless there is little else that fits the 'big and beautiful' category on the line in question. Viewed dispassionately, something large, with two cylinders and a modest sized wheel set will do the job just as well. As has already been said, given the number of MNs in various stages of reassembly it can't be a coincidence that, apart from a short interlude a while back, we only have one of the class active.

I disagree actually, i think with regards to MN's the preservation movement is behind the game.

Only 2-3 years ago mainline steam really came into it's own with regular frequencies to Weymouth and Swanage from London in the summer, even now lack of turning / need for 2 loco's prohibits the potential of this route... Indeed a regular London to Brighton on a sunday in the summer to me would be a money maker.
The lack of enough mainline steam loco's to service this is a frequent bug bear.
Factor in that 70013 is now 5 years into it's mainline ticket, as is Tornado. what will fill the void of 40-60 trips a year these pair do alone, whilst 35028's way down there on it's current boiler ticket and it does 20-30 trips a year.

There is a need for 2-3 more class 8's on the mainline, those with Southern Heritage would fit the demand of southern routes quite well.

I think Big Al was querying the usefulness of a MN on a preserved line, not in general. Clearly class 8 locos have a place on the mainline, but as noted by Big Al and others, on a preserved line, such a big loco will always be an indulgence.

Where will the money come from to overhaul and maintain further locos? Will there be a enough support crew. Locomotive Services stated stated that they wanted to limit tours per loco to 20 nr. based on what they though they could resource, and increase the fee.

Re : London - Brighton Which promoter will run it? ( does not fit with Steam Dreams type of trip).
Where will the rolling stock come from? The Dorest Coast stock is used out of Bristol on Sundays (July - September )and Steam Dreams are forming their own rake which will need to be cleaned and maintained between trips. What about supports crews ? train managers (The RTC ones from the south head to Crewe or Bristol at weekends).

Another problem with MNs is that they are RA9, while an unrebuilt WC/BB is RA6 much more useful on secondary routes.
As for MNs on preserved lines we all remember what happened to CanPac on Washford bank a few years ago. I have even had it slip itself to a stand at Ropley on load 5.

I thought that MNs were RA8 unlike A4s that are RA9 and accounts for the restrictions they suffer on some routes.

"Steam Railway" said they are RA9 so you are probably right!

Plus 4472 and 7298 ahead of the MN.
Then there is the boiler off 44901 and running repairs to the working 5s
And establishing a new works ......
Not much in 35009s favour in the short term. even after waiting for 10 years already.

Shaw Savill ... Not sure how that is unfortunate, but maybe it takes a different sort of mind?
