Here is the backgound to the other P2 names used, courtesy Clay/Cliffe. Ian Allen 1973:

Cock o' the North: The provocative nickname of a former chief of Clan Gordon.
Earl Marischal: The title of the President of the Scottish College of Heralds.
Lord President: The presiding judge at the Scottish Court of Session.
Mons Meg: The name of the ancient artillery piece at Edinburgh Castle.
Thane of Fife: The title of the Lord of the Ancient Scottish kingdom of Fife, as in Shakespeare's "Macbeth".
Wolf of Badenoch: The nickname of a former Earl of Buchan who was a cruel and ruthless leader of raiding parties.

So, a quite wide spead of Scottish origins for the names of the earlier class members. As mentioned above, I would have thought "Duke of Rothesay" more in keeping with the Scottish theme than "Prince of Wales."

Or, looking for a name from Scottish History that people would recognise? Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, Robert Burns....?

    Names ive suggested we're
    'MacBeth' ( bad luck ?
Black Douglas ( at odds with a Green engine)
Covonanter ( as theyll be paying for it)
The Young Pretender ( rather apt)
Toram Beag ( Bit tongue in cheek but it has railway connotations)
Sir William Connolly ( ohhhhh, really!)
Bonnie Prince Charlie ( which is now demoted to 'nickname' status)

With modern technology, there should be no need for a single name. I'm not suggesting programmable LED nameplates, but following the Royal theme how about James Bond "Aston Martin style" revolving nameplates? "Prince of Wales" in England, "Duke of Rothesay" in Scotland, and as the loco enters Wales "Owain Glyndwr" who was of course Prince of Wales in his time.

Simple solution, satisfies all three Nations! Just so long as someone on the footplate presses the button at the right time....

    Taxi.....

Duke of Rothsey was a Thompson Pacific, class A2/1 - straight out! I agree with the sentiments that a scottish link would have been nice, however having slept on it I see the marketing strategy more clearly and I think the name will grow on us over time. I would have loved "Lightning" as no.2007 in honour of the incoming F35Bs into the RAF, but this name does have significant marketing strength and no doubt will help with overseas interest too. A good move all round.

The con rod is about 9" shorter than a V2 and they never had a problem running at sustained high speeds. The hammer blow will be alleviated to some extent by the fact that three con rods are driving on the same axle and balancing these should reduce the effect. Even with an extra cylinder and divided drive, No. 60163 performed better than No. 70013 in trials on the GCR.

So that's what they're going to be called is it? Not a patch on the superb English Electric product of the same name.

    S. A. C. Martin: Well developing your argument about a long-scrapped Pacific, you surely will agree that "Prince of Wales" is a no-go?

    Why?....VOR No. 9....

I thought that nickname had been given to something else.
Edit. And it would seem I am wrong.

I am pretty certain the F35Bs are being called Lightning IIs, but I said "Lightning" as "Lightning II" has the propensity for those not in the know regarding the English Electric product to ask: what happened to the first one...!

RE Prince of Wales - VoR, LNER, GWR and LNWR and probably more besides. The more I think on the marketing possibilities the more it makes perfect commercial sense. Is it going to stop me from contributing - absolutely not - would I have liked something akin to Tornado - yes. C'est la vie. Let's see it built now!

Seems a bit of a shame the departure from the Scottish linked names, as mentioned though probably a PR thing.

Oh well- lets hope it draws more funding.

Or have an affair with 43106.

It could have been worse, they could have named it "Lying Scotsman" after Gordon Brown.

I suppose HRH will now become the de facto patron whether he likes it or not. LOL

Any name from Scottish lore like 'Nicola Sturgeon MSP' would be a definite mistake..
