I wonder if they thought about the possible 'bloopers' that could arise in the railway press headlines from the proposed name, especially if the punctuation goes astray - eg 'Prince of Wales eccentric crank, declared a failure'

Remember in the press all locomotives names begin with "The"

Imagine if they said "The Prince of Wales's" big end is hot.

They should have called it 'Lord Rockingham' - titled and Caledonian in one go ... and the whistle would have gone: ?!

The mind boggles - imagine a TV news piece covering some light shed maintenance:

Reporter: Can you explain what you are doing?
Fitter: We're just giving the Prince of Wales a good hard rodding - then we'll blow his tubes and finish with a nice washout...

I prefer a dot-matrix nameplate to make anagrams:

'LAWN POLICE FRS' or 'RICE FLOPS ANEW' or 'CROW FEELS PAIN'

    There will be better ones..

Can't help thinking that unless a really good name can be found, a locomotive is best to remain anonymous. "Naming by rote" has left us with memories of such as "Herringbone", "Boy Scout" and "Mere Hall", not to mention "Flannel Jacket" (a.k.a. "Channel Packet")!

"Prince of Wales" is all right but clunkingly unimaginative. I would suggest a further raid upon the legacy of the N.B.R. Atlantics which were associated with the same route as the P2's and had one of the most imaginative and carefully selected sets of names ever.

According to E.S. Cox the Derby drawing office was taking the mickey out of "Boy Scout" at the naming ceremony! I can't remember the source but it seems "Channel Packet" became "Flannel Jacket" at the hands of south London footplatemen within about two weeks. This very thread shows this is happening to "Prince of Wales".

This is a very difficult business which rarely gets the care and imagination devoted by the N.B.R. to its Atlantics. I am not necessary advocating adoption of one of those names but something with the same swing, glamour and flair as "Highland Chief" or "Bonnie Dundee". Nothing at all to do with the Prince of Wales as a person.

Guys, the decision on the name is made, & the froth being generated here is being viewed with a mixture of scorn & amusement elsewhere.

More important is the question of Doncaster or Darlington green... oh, wait... ;)

    I detect two bad decisions.

a: The inappropriate choice of name.
b: The inappropriate choice of engine.

I will donate my hard earned to more sane new builds.

Err, Why? And how? Pray tell...................................................

I for one am certainly looking forward to this behemoth gracing the metals regardless of name or colour - Darlington or Doncastor! :)
