Fingers crossed speed should be right up by now.

I guess those on board are all hunched over GPS sets at present!

Impossible to get accurate speeds from RTT, but the 9 mins shown Ferryhill to Darlington does at least indicate they may have been shifting along very nicely.

But a wild stab at an average speed from RTT shows a high seventies average from Durham to Darlington.

And now a similar average from Darlington to Northallerton. Although I am not sure where "approaching Northallerton" actually is, (from RTT).

The joys of armchair timing using RTT! LOL!

Revised times show an 80 mph average Darlington to Northallerton.

Northallerton to Thirsk looks promising - made up 1/2 min on schedule..

Taking an average from Darlington to Thirsk gives a rather nice 85 mph average. Pointless trying to work out an average over short distances using times from RTT. Bad enough trying to work out any averages that way!

Not sure what the distance for Tollerton Junction is, but it looks like they may have had a good spell at 90 or more. Again with enormous caveats from trying to estimate speeds from RTT.

The icing on the cake is if they get a clear run into York as that could give a very good start to start average speed. It looks like they may have had a start to pass average Newcastle to Tollerton getting on for 75 mph.

Very approx 12 1/2 miles. I'm guessing the (very patient) punters got what they came for.

Is that from on the train?

If "approaching" on RTT means entering the platform then there is going to be a very good start to stop time and average speed.

Anything under around 68 and a half mins will give a 70 mph start to stop average.

We saw her going through the north end of Darlington and she was going at a good speed. I didn't have the exact time but it was somewhere between 17.20 and 17.25 probably nearer the former rather than the latter. It was the railway bridge on Salters Lane North to anyone who knows Darlington. Spectacular sight for me and my 4 year old son. We saw the Northbound journey at Northallerton station but this was far more impressive. The speed combined with the fact it was night time so you could see the glow from the firebox and sparks flying was breathtaking. My son was also very impressed, bless him. Well worth the 2 postponements to get to see her fly past when it was dark.

There is the potential for a decent max in amongst those RTT times. But I'd rather see the actual times and speeds.

Hopefully they are in York now: RTT still shows them as approaching. Be nice to have had a really fast start to stop time, station to station. Short of that a decent start to stop time to a signal stop outside of York will be fine!

Very good! You do know that he'll be no good for anything else now though, don't you? There's a good few folk here who've never amounted to much after such an experience in their formative years. ;)

I'm sure it's a memory that will stay with him

With the way things have been around York today some of that may have been waiting to get into the station. Fingers crossed they got a good average speed if that is discounted.

If it was 66 mins start to stop into York station that indicates a fairly decent entry.

Hopefully Big Al will update us soon as to at least some of the details.
