The last two monthly updates raise a couple of questions in my mind that maybe 82045MS can answer.

It is self evident that the work at Bridgnorth covers several important aspects of construction at the present time. Axle box's, spring hangers, flexible stays, wheel alignment tooling, drilling and reaming of the rear end and cold rivet manufacture. These items constitute and require a fairly large amount of skilled machine time. My question is, how is this being managed in the efficient manner which appears to be the hallmark of this project. Is all this work being undertaken by volunteer labour ?

A comment on the wheel machining. Although its difficult to be certain, photographs of the castings show no evidence of flaws, which historically were major challenges given the geometry and scale of driving wheels. Congratulations to the team.

I think they are doing wonders given the outside working conditions for most of the tasks.

    Good morning gios.

I can only answer simply as I`m `her indoors` but as far as I`m aware all the machining (and other work) is being done by the brilliant team of volunteers. The axlebox machining is particularly time consuming and they are under some constraint because they are using the SVR machine shop facilities which are also needed by the full time staff at the railway. Nevertheless I think a `shift` system will be adopted in the New Year so that the axleboxes are ready when the completed wheel sets are returned from South Devon. Working on the chassis outdoors certainly isn`t easy and everyone is hoping that winter is a much more pleasant experience than the last

As for the wheels - I guess flaws will only show in the fullness of time but it is true to say that the Boro` Foundry have done an excellent job so all credit to them.

    Regards
    Barbara :)

Barbara: re your last comment above, I suspect they castings for the driving wheels would have been subject to some modern testing techniques to ensure they were sound before they were even machined.
Someone with "the knowlege" will no doubt set us right!

46118. I am sure I saw somewhere in 82045 Locomotive Trust material that testing was undertaken. Certainly the wheel on show at Bridgnorth at the Autumn gala, showed evidence of machined surfaces which indicated non destructive testing (NDT) had been undertaken. As you say, someone will set us right !

    Hi Guys,

I asked the man who knows and he said "yes, the appropriate tests on the wheel castings have been carried out at the foundry."

    Regards
