Thought I heard something a bit different earlier this evening. As there are virtually no Thameslink/Southern services due to the weather, so seeing *any* trains this evening is unusual.

That Wimbledon/Streatham/Victoria routing is not that unusual. I believe its the booked route for the VSOE Bath trips with 35028, and I have certainly done it with steam not that long ago (not on VSOE!).But you are right, that trundle through Staines is tedious in the extreme.

Didn't hear any "this route has not been gauged" excuses. Still as you say, well done to control for getting this thing home.

I was inclined to agree with you.. Five years flies fast, but I too recalled more than the VSOE going that way, Tangmere shorted the 3rd rail once that route, but can't remember which tour that was, but was at least 5 years ago.
I think its fallen out of favour in recent years but that route used to see frequent use.
Streatham is however a busy route, more so than Hounslow which is probably why.

According to TRACKatlas, once you're on the line to Tooting and Streatham, you could turn left at Streatham South Junction to get to Victoria via Balham and Clapham Junction, a somewhat shorter distance than via Herne Hill.

And not if you want to get to platform 2 at Victoria. SECR not LBSCR!

No problem getting to Victoria Platform 2 from Balham. VSOE does it regularly. One problem with this might be the time taken for steam to join the Up Fast line from East Croydon at Streatham North Junction.

A couple of shots from the trip on Monday from me. It was a good day out in the end even with the problems. The magical mystery tour on the return leg was a bit of a bonus as we managed to get the main via Surbiton both times. I must congratulate all the crews, SWT and NR staff who must have had a pretty horrible day but managed to get us home only 3 mins late, very well done given the awful weather conditions. Photograph below is from Salisbury and one from Waterloo can be found by clicking the link:

Braunton racing through Esher on the outbound leg before the weather modified the return journey.

Two lovely shots that are simple and apart from the wrong line Salisbury location capture exactly something that could have been taken 50 years ago - well apart from the NR/SWT station sign! And while we are talking of SWT, having picked up the wider SWT service rearranging that took place to get this show on the road, I think we should award South West Trains the Train Operating Company of the Year award for their acceptance of tweaks to their service so that Braunton could do what a Bulleid does best. OK, FGW was brilliant over the Cheltenham Flyer but that was really special. This trip was just a hop down to Salisbury. Perhaps 2014 might see a little more largesse from Virgin, London Midland, East Coast and Grand Central....not!

Only what RTT said - i.e. signal check at Woking because of a service that was crossed from the Portsmouth line ahead of her and generally to the timings thereafter. However the fact that DBS/UKRT was able to work out a solution with NR/SWT does spark a glimmer of hope that the Steam Dreams Anniversay ACE next September may lead to something special. But that is possibly for a separate discussion in the Steam Traction section.
