I'm quite in agreement with this. If 6634's boiler is shot then there's a perfect candidate to be sectioned. Please don't destroy a boiler that is perfectly good to be restored! I'd love to see it with a purposeful future on 92245, however even if used to keep one of our other 9f's in steam I would approve!

Likewise I know 48518 was hacked about so that the firebox could be used on the County, however isn't the plan now to use a newbuild firebox? If this is indeed the case, is 48518's boiler still in one piece and has it got a future elsewhere now?

    Cheers

    Paul

The County web site shows photos of a great deal of work having been done to the firebox. Are you sure that's correct?

I could not see where it says on the County website that they have actually started to modify the firebox, rather just dismantled the smokebox and barrel, however perhaps I have missed the important bit!
Maybe they have simply assessed the firebox condition and are considering a different solution, Cannot actually see any comment on their website as such.

Thanks for the pointer std tank.

For the benefit of others, there is considerable work taking place on the 8F firebox to reconfigure it to the required specification.

I've seen a picture where the safety valve "holes" on top of the firebox have been blanked off.

Presumably in Steve Latham's care at his Rowsley base. I heard a wheel lathe will be arriving at some stage to add to the machinery already installed.

It's in very good condition so will probably be used to replace another 9F's boiler - that's all I could find out.

Most 9Fs have boilers in similar condition as they did solittle work before being withdrawn, so that is long term thinking. 92203 is the only one to have gone through several 10yr cycles, and even this one hasn't had that hard a life in preservation.

Gav106 or a GWSR affiliate: Any further news from Mr Hoskin or elsewhere about the Turkish steel firebox unit for 44901?

    Thanks in advance.

Do we know yet why 92245 boiler has ended up at Peak Rail?

As in "Turkish" Government? Maybe an export licence is required, even if not a complete locomotive.

But...we dont know if liberating this boiler requires the dismantling of an existing engine. Maybe there are spare units lying at a works in remotest Turkey....

I'd be very surprised if there were any 8F boilers "lying" anywhere. TCDD haven't carried out any works overhauls for the best part of 30 years and even then the 'Churchills' were regarded as obsolete. If a boiler is available it is almost certainly off one of the remaining wrecks. Ray.

I understand theres 2 8F's in Turkey which are salvageable, the rest are now considered "safe" museum pieces.
One is complete, similar condition to those previous, the other is a bit rotten and stripped.
Both are on the "scrap watch" list.

My guess would be both would / could / should come back, isn't the Patriot taking a pony wheel for one, I would guess, condition considering, the Boiler is from the same and maybe a tender too.

I recall reading somewhile ago, TCDD maintains a full set of 8F patterns, made by the LMS and delivered by Jarvis, were provided to allow local production of parts. Considering how little is scrapped there (and how long it takes) these probably exist as well, certainly one quote in a magazine a couple of years back suggested this was still the case.

And quite apart from recovering metalwork, those 8F patterns surely would be of considerable value and use repatriated to the UK. Hopefully someone is on the case.
