But that was only a light engine move IIRC; we're talking about haulage now with PAYING passengers !

Those were the days of Area Managers and a lot of autonomy. Almost anything could happen then, as long as it was sensible in the eyes of those who could make it happen!

An S160 seems like an odd choice for a main line certificated loco but we have an 8F and we've had a 7F on the main line so why not? I'd certainly pay for a run behind one where she can be opened up in earnest and make herself well and truly heard.

Indeed an s160 on the S&C would be quite an entertainment…

Up Shap ..well it will be ...er ..er ...different.

Which is why it's worth a visit to the Churnet Valley Rly to sample 6046 up the bank to Ipstones to gain an impression of what's in store once main-line accreditation is gained.

How about the Jacobite? The American tourists would surely love that, especially if it carried a suitable name. Not saying they need to make the Jacobite any more appealing btw.

Not sure about that - if you took in a railtour on a trip to the US of A and 44871 turned up, would you feel a bit short changed? :D

Well it would be a scratch...! Seriously though, I think the average tourist would rather something "British" looking (assuming they noticed/cared at all) to something too familiar - isn't that the point of tourism? Mind you, I'd be willing to have a go at persuading them otherwise, if it meant hearing an S160 on Beasdale! ;)

Out of interest wouldn't an S160 (driver dia 4'9") have a speed limit of 50mph on the mainline? If memory serves me right its 50mph <5ft, 60mph for 5ft to 6ft and 75mph >6ft. That would probably be ok for the S&C but would restrict (if not prohibit) use on the WCML and ECML.

I'd pay for a mainline trip behind an S160 as it's definitely something different.

At least the water and coal capacity of the tender should make it a bit main line friendly , and if that large light on the front was turned on, you wouldnt need marker lights :) an S160 can be best described as being a bit of a slow speed slogger i can just picture in my mind seeing or better put hearing the S160's nathan chime and the exhaust as it runs over ribblehead viaduct.

    Not so sure..

I would imagine americans want the scenery, the culture and the ambiance of the area.. not something the same as what they can get back home.
I wouldn't want to go to America to ride behind Dwight D Eisenhower.. but I would for the Big Boy.

I can't wait to see an S160 out on a mainline. Have seen them in Poland, Turkey, India, China and on UK preserved lines but only on shunting or short branch line work. Intrigued to find out if this was because they were time expired or whether they are just not very suitable for more demanding longer runs.

I've noticed from the kwvr Facebook page that 5820 is expecting a visit from the VAB man, I wonder if it's beaten the CVR's S160.

Central Wales line would suit this loco no need for any great speed and plenty of slogging that whistle would sound awesome in the Welsh lills.

    Cheers Dave

Doubtful seeing as the Network Rail Gauging Profile for a S160 does not exist (yet!).

Still planned, but in no rush to do so. 6046 has had sandboxes fitted underneath the smokebox and at the side of cab to get around using the one on top (how do you fill it under OHLE?). When she's ready to go we'll let you know, however you can still experience her up our 1in45/59 bank to Ipstones at Churnet Valley. Next dates is Jan 25/26 and it is booked to be 6046!
