We are currently on the lookout for any historical photos or information regarding this unique Bagnall. If anyone has any information then please let me know as we are working up plans for an overhaul
Her saddle tank requires replacement. I was wondering if anyone on this forum knows any good steel fabricators who can do such work. The original was rivetted and we are keen to replicate this but in modern day methods.

To all you Barclay fans out there; have any of you had problems with the injectors on these locos? We have had problems with the injectors wasting at high pressure and in hot weather. We have pickled them with no luck and the next option is to strip them down. Unfortunately they don't want to come apart! Does anyone have drawings and/or advice on how to get them apart please? She was built in 1951.

    Thanks

    Matt

That sounds about right for Barclay injectors Matt.

At the Swindon and Cricklade Railway we have some small updates on our industrials...

Hunslet 0-6-0ST 2413 "Gunby" - Cab to be worked on this year, boiler lifted and motion inspected.

Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T 1464 "No 70/Phoenix" - Boiler/tanks to be lifted soon for firebox work and motion inspected.

Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST 2138 "Swordfish" Chassis complete, awaiting return of boiler this winter. Hoping to Steam in 2014!

I'm pretty sure Standen Engineering in Ely (Cambs) have done loco water tanks before - don't know if they would be any use to you (ignore the fact they primarily appear to be agricultural engineers). Their offices/works are just across the road from Ely station....no connection, just seem to recall reading about them doing it somewhere in the distant past....

Doh! Posted too soon - found this link which confirms they did the tanks for one of the L&H Fairburn tanks when it had them replaced at the GCR (and a host of other locomotive work for the GCR as well):

Bellerophon is currently undergoing winter maintenance at Foxfield following successful running trials after fitting of the new axle and other works at the South Devon. Included in the maintenance is investigation into the valve setting as it was noticable that she had all but lost a beat when notched up on her return.
Following this she will be back in service at Foxfield this year and also has a couple of trips away planned, one being to the Welland Steam Rally, near Malvern, 25-27 July 2014.

Work has started on Hunslet 3839/1956 Wimblebury prior to removal of the boiler ready for overhaul/retube. It is hoped that this will be completed within 12-18 months.

I stumbled across your industrial thread by accident. After reading the content and coming across a post about Robert Heath no.6, it jogged my memory of when I joined the GCR loco just after my 10th birthday. One of my first jobs was cleaning in the firebox of Robert Nelson no4. I know it was an 0-6-0 saddle tank, possibly RSH, and was before their big engine policy. Does anyone know of its present whereabouts? I presume its no longer at the GCR, thanks

Reported in Steam Railway No.423 that Robert Nelson No.4 now resides at Riverstown Old Corn Mill Railway, Ireland.

A pic from it's heyday on the GCR, at the cavalcade weekend in the 1980's.

Robet Nelson No.4 is a Hunslet (1800/1936). It had a stint at the Glos/Warwickshire Rly before it went to Ireland.

Many thanks for that. I'm no longer up that end of the country, but I also seem to remember a small 4 wheel saddle tank behind Loughborough shed scattered around and all in grey primer, Marston Thompson Evershed no.3 springs to mind. There was also a small 0-4-0 saddle tank that used to be dumped at the side of the walkway up to the station called Hilda, which I am sure got cut up.
I now volunteer at the Yeovil railway centre and part own a Ruston 48DS DS1174. I also regularly fire and drive their two industrials, 1921 0-4-0st Pecket no.1579 "Pectin" which is due to be withdrawn in April for it's 10 year overhaul, and 1914 0-4-0 Barclay no.1398 " Lord Fisher" who's overhaul was completed last year.

    Thanks, Dillon

Out of interest what are the bushes for as shown in photo IMG-20140121-00672.jpg on the Overhaul of Oliver section on Cambrian Railways Forum?

I was wondering the same thing and came to the conclusion (right or wrong) that they were using the old tubeplate as a drilling jig for a new one underneath but I couldn't see the flanges of the latter. Normally one would press the flanges before drilling. Maybe one of the group will chip in and tell us. Ray.

Most tubeplate flanges are welded, these days. Much easier to drill through before welding on the flange.
