Mk1 door handles - help/advice needed

I have what I believe are a pair of ex MK1 slam door locks and handles which i am in the process of fitting to two narrow gauge carriage doors.

However the 3/8" square spindle on the back of the handles is too short to pass through the door timber, does any one know how the 3/8" steel is held into the brass handle? If I can get the steel square out I can easily replace with longer section.

I have put the steel in the vice and given the handle a gentle tap with a hammer to try and extract however there was no sign of movement and I am very reluctant to apply more force to the brass handle for fear of damaging it!!!

Any advice?

 

How about extending the present steel shaft by welding an extra piece on?

 

I suggest you follow Gary's advice above. I suspect the brass is cast onto the steel. To separate the two will take more than a gentle tap.

 

Sadly I am more of a wood worker, than a metal worker and this is a 'homework project' so am limited to the support I have locally. Will have to wait till I return to North wales next.
