Hi just a question in regards to the charter.

Obviously with the current weather, will the charter go ahead considering the amount of rainfall and the fields around burrs? do they get flooded or are they still ok for use with a few previous days rain?

Also is there any possibility of someone letting me know regarding the stance on line-siding during the gala; I say letting me know as I remember a few years back quite a conversation or should I say argument appeared in regards to when it was mentioned before.

    Many Thanks

    Martyn

Charter will go ahead whatever the weather , just dress appropriately , waders etc , diving gear etc

My understanding of lineside and the ELR is an absolute No , however there are plenty of place to photograph away from the lineside

    From the ELR website
"The East Lancashire Railway welcomes people to come and take advantage of some of the fantastic and unique photo opportunities our railway provides. The railway offers great photo locations from publicly accessible areas. Most of the bridges along the line have been given geographic grid reference points; these are listed at the bottom of the page after the location spots.
We would ask all of our visitors to please respect the railway and its environment: please do not trespass on the railway line or any of the private property adjoining the railway."

I for one am looking forward to this one and am happy to support the ELR on both days :) Will be nice to see other regulars out and about after partial hibernation!

Thanks to everyone who has (and will) put this event together; much appreciated.

Weather forecast for Saturday not good, but better for Sunday. One of the few occupations, however, that you can continually get it wrong and still keep your job (weather forecasting). 60 years on and they still don't get it any where near . Went to the diesel day last Saturday (11.01.14), forecast Friday night before retiring and making plans for an early rise was for a frosty morning with blues skies, wonderful. Why did I walk from Tottington to Summerseat at 08.30 in sleet with a wind driving it at 45 degrees?! It didn't stop raining until 10.30, patchy sun throughout the rest of the day, not the wall to wall blue as forecasted.
It will probably (hopefully) be wrong again and gives us wall to wall blue both days. See you there.

Have taken the plunge and booked Advance tickets on the 0622 from Soton XC returning on the 1735 Branson to Euston. A lot of money for both of us but I keep putting this Gala on my hit list but this will be the first time we have actually made it. All being well haulage by 3 new engines. Don't really care what the weather does as linesiding will be limited.

Well the weather does look a little grim today but I'm sure there will no shortage of spectacle. 50+ photographers went to last nights warm up event at the night shoot on Bury south shed with some nice scenes created by Nigel and his team, an excellent event as always. More images hopefully later form today.

Loving this gala - grey skies and a little rain make for good steaming conditions and I couldn't possibly miss 49395's last gala.

The Heywood curve into Bury BS is causing a lot of wheel slip and the B1 ground to a halt but otherwise this continues ELR's record of good galas.

Oh and a 17 wagon freight is great and even Metrolink is running!

Nice footage Phil despite the weather.

Tell me, am I going senile or did I see wing mirrors on the chocolate and cream coach in the shot of 45407 leaving Rammy?

Black engines and rain on the ELR 18 January 2014

The weather is never likely to be a strong point when a steam gala is held in January, and today was no exception - dull damp and chilly. But the three resident BR black locos were supplement by two welcome visitors: the return to an old stamping ground of BR Standard 4 2-6-0 No 76084 (a twin of the late lamented No 76079) and a return visit after 10 years of the impressive ex LNER B1 4-6-0 No 61264.

A welcome innovation at this gala was the use of Pete Waterman's restored observation coach (the 'obbo') behind the engine on one of the trains, allowing armchair travel and a cuppa for a modest sum - highly recommended!

Glad you enjoyed yourself Peter, hope you are drying out.

More to come tomorrow starting as ever with the early morning runpasts at Burrs, a donation of £10 would see any linesider well rewarded with the b1 taking its turn tomorrow.

Many thanks to all those who came to the photographic evening. Great shots those already posted, we hope everyone enjoyed it.

Good day lineside today and an excellent shed shoot on friday. The lousy weather put me off the runpasts at Burrs but it picked up soon after and a very enjoyable day although trains ran about 25 mins late.
Ramsbottom was logged with cars and hard to park at lunch time on a trip to the chippy so straight back afterwards to Burrs.

    some pictures here = http://www.steamingnorth.com/thumbnails.php?album=158

    John
Hoping to make the runpasts on sunday with the B1 and the std banking

It is with great sadness I have to tell you that the Super D 49395 will take no further part I the event. There are problems with the small tubes in the boiler. We're all gutted about this. Timetable is been sorted as I type. Please still come support us.

Very sad news about the Super D, but is it the timetable or the loco roster that is being"sorted"?
