46115 - Class 7, 45699 - Class 6, 70013 - Class 7, 45305 - Class 5. You just can't ignore the fact that these locomotives have different power classifications and they will certainly behave differently on a hill irrespective of how well they are driven. If you were going to do things sensibly then you would roster a locomotive according to how well these trips were booking and load the train accordingly. But that is probably too complicated so I'm with Paul42. 9/10 plus support in the winter, if it's financially viable, is the safest bet.

2 years ago we had a 44932 / 45305 double header with 12 on. This was due to West Coast having to put an extra carriage on due to a party booking and it was considered to be too much for 45305 solo as originally booked. West Coast provided 44932 as a pilot to accommodate this (as I believe it was their party not RTC's) and we had some excellent running. I would not think it would be sensible to put 45305 over Shap solo with 12 on at this time of year, it is asking for trouble especially if there is severe weather about. There is plenty of available traction at Carnforth -use it!

And coped MAGNIFICENTLY on November 9 when it was looped at Tebay and had to climb Shap from a standing start.

That's part of the experience with steam - its unpredictability !

Noted but I do not think it should have a load of more than 10 coaches.

It was mentioned in Steam Railway that there will not be any WCME'S next year to due to engineering works on the S & C . What alternatives are there apart from Shap Northbound and Southbound with steam on or off further South ?

It would be nice to see them northbound around the Cumbrian coast for the scenery and back down the WCML

Isn't that quite complicated to arrange though..

It would be a pity to miss a year, but elsewhere it was suggested todmorden curve is due to open, giving a chance of Slough, copy pit and miles plating in a day out. If the distance is a bit light, maybe throw in a servicing stop at east lancs

Longer, slower route with single line sections that need to be considered with pathing, also north of Workington you either need sealed window stock or stewards preventing window hanging due to tight clearances in tunnels north of there.

Not impossible, but complicated as you say, probably makes for too long a day from London, even with the Electric sprinting along the WCML.

Diesel charters go round the coast quite often with air con stock but even so, standing in a vestibule for the journey from Carlisle to Maryport to ensure the ban is a pain, but has to be done as you never know if there is going to be someone checking that the rule is being enforced. With Mk 1 stock I suppose it could also be done but it also means watching the whole coach.
Also as has been said, whilst it's a very scenic run, it is also slow and tortuous.

I don't see any problem at all with a day from Preston to Barrow to Carlisle and back to Preston. It's been done before (in 2008) starting from Leeds with diesel but that was a bit of a mission. Don't see a problem with it starting and finishing at Manchester with diesel to and from Preston. It just needs someone to do it!

The coast is quite dooable, it's the idea of a London start for it that's brave, it takes long enough to Carlisle/Newcastle bombing up the direct routes at 100MPH on charters.

I sense an ulterior motive there as your garden will be open to the public then and feel you will be asking for a waterstop at Askam lol

No ulterior motive Baron, just an opportunity for those people from the south to sample the wonderful scenery we have to offer in Cumbria and not forgetting the bracing sea air

I really hope that Gordon Hogsdon (sp) shall be one of the engineers for these WCME's.
Who was at the footplate w/ 46115 Last October on that CME?
