Some really good images all round, so I thought I would add my own, with the pair taking water at a rather bleak Hellifield station.

Great to see the B1 back on the mainline and should be a useful loco this year, is it passed for 75mph still?

Should be in theory with 6'2 drivers, 45407 is what limited the train to 60.

Total nonsense restricting 5's to 60mph on the basis of driving wheel diameter unless of course the owner requests it.
Would make pathing a whole load easier.
Always seemed strange to me when 7802 and 80098 with 5' 8" drivers were passed for 75mph.

    Cheers Dave

My two photographs are up on to the website from yesterday, Shap Wells and Armathwaite ( click on either image, opens up the website gallery and can view the images there ) :

And in usual 21st Century Railwaymen fashion, I've put up a blog recounting yesterday's annual jaunt out. Rain, ale and a near bowl.... 'A Hard Rain's A'Gonna Fall' . Please feel free to leave any comments or opinions!

Two excellent shots there Jonathon (I think I'll have to try the angle you have used at Armathwaite before Winter is out) and a fun read of your blog post. Thanks for sharing, it's enjoyable reading others adventures.

Thanks Alan for your kind reply. I agree about the B1, and remember occasional combinations like this in the Sheffield area in the late 50s after the sheds were moved from the LM region to Eastern.

I have checked the three versions I had of the northbound timings: only UK steam had the Penrith looping whereas the RTC brochure and RTT had a straight-through run. Old habits die hard and I was using David's sheet! We passed Penrith at 11.24, 7 late cf RTT, but I omitted to note arrival time in Carlisle - sorry!

Our arrival in Carlisle was 11:42. A good run, some nice sound effects on the way back, too. We did stop rather suddenly just on the south side of Ais Gill, and the signal was green. Cost us about 5 minutes. Never did find out what that was all about.

That makes 18 miles Penrith-Carlisle in 18 minutes: another even-time run for a 60-limited train - not bad at all!

I also am still puzzled by the sudden stop before Garsdale - anyone else know what that was?

Thank you Ian. Yeah, I've never known about this shot at Armathwaite but when you limit yourself to a certain distance from your transport, certainly forces you to investigate every inch of land available.

Certainly the blog is no work of Shakespeare, but I'm glad people find it enjoyable to read! Thank you very much.

The sudden stop just before Moorcock tunnel was due to an injector problem on the B1. Apparently it was fixed at the scene.
