No I do not currently volunteer

Tom and Erica were laid to rest today at Sty Hilda's Church, Snainton, in a joint service.

As the cortege made its way through Ruswarp, it crossed the level crossing at the Station and B1 61264 was waiting to pay tribute as it passed.

A very poor photo taken as a record when I passed some time beforehand.

Many thanks to Network Rail and the Thompson B1 Locomotive Trust for their help in making this possible.

Rest in peace, Tom and Erica.

Going off the general conversation seen on the 92214 thread, can I ask what is the state of play regards the operational locomotives at Grosmont for this season.

With 92214 sold, and with some due back from maintenance, what are we expecting to see.

Im hoping that it would look something like 75029, 44806, 45428, 76079 (overhaul finished) and 63395 (overhaul finished). No. 29 might feature some of the season. 34101 I would also think makes a return and I would also think gets passed for Whitby.

I have heard that 60007 is to be based off Southall and is to be spending time on the mainline, and with 61264 having been passed for mainline work and doing well this spring, I am wondering where this might leave the engine. Ideally a return for summer Whitby traffic would be fantastic but I might think WCRC might tempt it away with the prospect of mainline work or a return to the Highlands.

I'm pretty sure that 61264 will also be a key player this year. I doubt if 34101 will be finished for the peak season. I would think there's probably a chance of 45407 and 44871 visiting in the early part of the season.

Ian Riley has said that they won't. Apparently 62005 will be visiting.

It's the first I've heard of 62005 visiting, but nice if it is true.

I shall have my fingers firmly crossed in that case - it would be good to see it back, hopefully alongside 63395.

Sigh! No it does't. Last year'a brief visit was the first for several years. It normally overwinters at Carnforth an then goes straight back to Scotland without ever touching NYMR metals,.

All of this must just be my imagination then:

    2006: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p451398298 on the NYMR
    2008: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p425702967 on the NYMR

    2008: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p734542330 on the NYMR

    2013: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p1066966718 on the NYMR

Its also seen here at Shildon: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p1057585587 where it had been due to work the Blyth Spirit tour. This was cancelled owing to an issue with a cylinder.

    And on the mainline:

2007 from the North East to Barrow Hill: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p336103427

2007: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p54115490 Three Dales tour, having the engine added at Battersby as it had been on the NYMR.

2008: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p376293376 added at Middlesbrough as it had been at the NYMR

NELPGs own information on the engine (See here: http://www.nelpg.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=17&Itemid=4) shows it being at the NYMR during 2000, 2003, 2005, and 2006.

In all, Id still say that by and large the engine does try to make it to Grosmont both before and after the season in Scotland. In recent years maintanance of the engine has brought this up to the season in Scotland and that also the Jacobite season has been lengthened to cater for the demand of the service. This has seen the engine move earlier to Fort William, often direct from Carnforth.

62005 is a gorgeous piece of kit, and my favourite engine: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p340258256 - so Im always looking to find it. Even tried to get it in Scotland last year, but missed owning to not being aware it went south when I went north having been in the lakes walking.

Pending on how far back you go decides who is more accurate and I still stand by what Ive said, but then if Im going to say something people already know its in a manner that shows respect to others Im conversing with. If you cant do that - dont bother trying...

If you read Steve's last post you are confirming that what he said is correct. Where is your evidence for it being at the NYMR between 2998 and 2013? To me that says it hasn't been seen much on the NYMR in recent years. I for one would rather it ran at the NYMR every year but if it is at least with us this summer that is a good start.. I hope this is a polite response, but please, if you write wrong self opinionated twaddle, please expect to be challenged. I do when I am guilty, that's what makes a forum work.

Each time your doing this your framing the stats to suit your own opinion (aka self opinionated twaddle) and thus skewing the idea your right, Im wrong. Your mentioning 2008 to 2013, whereas Im mentioning within the last ten years as being recent and to many thats a fair point. What you say suits you, what I say suits me. Both back up each others statements accurately and as a result debate should be healthy and respectful. Far too often on here those who think they know stamp down on those who try to know. Maybe Im someway between the two, being younger than many on here, but equally so I see the bigger picture more often when it comes to operation and how things have evolved during privitisation.

62005 shouldnt be at the NYMR if it can earn more staying at Carnforth and then being in Scotland. NELPG have had members state they want to see the engine in the north east when possible, but with money flowing from different areas, the K1 is requested to work the Jacobite and as a result can earn more paying for itself and adding to NELPGs funds. By going where its needed, where it can earn more the relationship between WCRC and NELPG over the K1 is strengthened and both sides gain. Thats good for both and for the engine.

As for being, challenged - I welcome it and know when Im out of my depth (cue recent statements on Southern engines). I'd happilly admit that design and particulars of engines themselves can be something I dont know as much of. Sometimes however, people dont like it when others have a different opinion. Thats fine. Its also part of debate and respect for each other (of which some of the most respected posters Ive corresponded with and thus learned from on here are Bean Counter, Spamcan81 some of the admin team and possibly irronically 61624). Perhaps some need to factor in that others might not agree and that healthy respect for others views is needed, rather than trying to stamp them out. Debate is good, after all - thats what makes a forum work.

Well you have provided the stats. Extending to the limits of your data, since the turn of the century 62005 has visited the NYMR on 6/14 seasons, which is less than 50% - fact, not opinion. Not a lot for a supposedly NYMR-based engine and I seem to recall that for its spring gala appearance last year it was advertised as a visiting engine It is entirely possible that it earns more at Fort William than it would staying at the NYMR, but the cost of maintenance is a lot higher (especially tyres) but also the human costs of supporting it so far away from home and I do wonder how sustainable that is.

Well personally i'd like to see 62005 make it's way south… they did work on double track mainlines too you know.

    anyway,

So that would make 4 Black Fives at the railway during April (45428,44871, 45407, 44806) is this the biggest gathering of black fives in preservation? Its got all the makings of a Black 5 gala- if only 45212 could make an appearance as well!

I wonder if they will all be running together at some point? (That would make a lovely photo op at Grosmont shed!)

Be interested to hear how 44806 gets on in its new home too!

In April/May 2011 (175th Gala); 44767, 44871, 45212, 45407, 45428 were on the line, with at least 4 of them out on one day (30/4).
