If your journey takes you near Ross on Wye there is a fine collection of railwayana next to one of the old bridges in the town.

Eccelesbourne Valley at Wirksworth is probably geographically closest to Crich, though best see if they have steam out on those dates beforehand.

    Simon,

I only live 8 miles from Ross and had no idea there was any railway memorabilia there. Thank you for letting me know. Must pay a visit.

Stop off for a snack at the Cambrian project in Oswestry or Llynclys station for the railway museum and rolling stock. You can also join up and get involved in the next phase of restoration... Trains also run on selected days at both locations.

No problem. There are a number of signs, I assume taken from the station but they may not be local fixed to the abutments of a dismantled bridge if memory serves correctly.. I didn't have my camera with me when I went (a few years back now) and I can't find a picture of them online, so I hope they are still there..

Living only a few miles from Monmouth, this is what I'd suggest...

Dean Forest Railway is a must! Also maybe take a look at the Perrygrove Railway, and do some wandering in the forest, especially if you want to have a peek at the Flour Mill!

Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway isn't too far, certainly closer than the SVR!

    Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

    Severn Valley Railway.

You might also want to consider a call into the Amerton Railway Steam Gala on the weekend of 14th & 15th June. Amerton is on the A518 Stafford - Uttoxeter road so could be on your route to or from SVR/Llangollen towards Crich.

2ft gauge - usually the three home locos in steam plus two or three visitors (2014 line up TBC).

Follow the website for more information:-
