You can't shut a diesel down when running in vac mode as you woulden't be able to get the brakes off, probably heating as well as I don't recall seeing any steam coming from the stock, so may well have been there for that purpose regardless of load.

No I do not currently volunteer
No not quite, since the train ran via Victoria and Warrington, it approached Crewe from the North, Galatea backed onto the rear of the train, and then departed North turning off to Chester, so the diesel would not have been detached..

    Ah yes - quite right!
I was forgetting it was coming via Chester when I wrote that - not the most direct way to get from Crewe to Shrewsbury! Lol.
The diesel would have come off and swapped at Shrewsbury for the run back though!
(although if really awkward I suppose they could have run the entire train around the triangle with locos at opposite ends - but they didn't!)

Not the quickest way but it made a round trip, and a few extra steam miles.

Indeed - a nice circular tour.

I enjoyed Past Time Rail's "Chester Chuffer" charters: Catch a service train from Shrewsbury to Birmingham before changing to steam haulage and retracing back to Shrewsbury, on up to Crewe and round to Chester before returning back to Shrewsbury enroute to Brum. Finally getting off to catch the next service train back to Shrewsbury again! lol.
