Near previous one in the spring. News from local paper:

Wensleydale railway hits the buffers for the second time this year ...

It's a hard life being a headline writer for a local newspaper - no original thought needed. They all seem to have access to the central database of 'Railway Buffs Plans Hit The Buffers' style headlines!

Hopefully it will be a long time before the Severn Valley is reminded what they are like too.

Hopefully we are never reminded what they are like!

All the best to the Wensleydale guys. It is a stunning part of the country and deserves the gentle sound of a steam engine reverberating around the valley.

Thankfully it is at the western end of the line and the vast majority of it will still be useable, so they should continue to generate income.

Not surprised at this news really, my wife and I took a weeks break in the dales in early October hoping to do some walking, but it poured every day, a couple of roads were closed because of water damage, mind you it made the waterfalls more exciting to watch.

From a few posts on the facebook page:
Can you help us by Sponsoring a shovel full of stone.
All we are asking you to do is donate your 1p and 2p coins (or coins of any other denomination). This is to help repair Akebar Embankment which we hope to start on Monday 27th January. Just hand them in at the office at Leeming Bar or hand them to one of our volunteers or members of staff and we will add them to our collection. Please ask all your friends to help us as well.

We are having to put the building of the platform at Northallerton until we have sorted out the Akebar Embankment. When we have sorted that out we will then turn our attention to Northallerton. It might be done by July.

Does anyone have an update on this ? I'm considering a trip to the WR in May.

Also of interest, can anyone recommend the best way of getting there by public transport ? Assuming if going by rail, one would alight at Northallerton station ?

    Many thanks

You could try e-mailing the railway asking for info. http://www.wensleydalerail.com/contact-us

Theirs has to be one of the least helpful websites I've seen. No details on "How to find us", do they want people to visit them?

There are a couple of bus services which pick up outside Northallerton Station and drop near Leeming Bar - use http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/article/25851/Transport---timetable-information to search for them (the RAF Leeming to Northallerton Service 53 and Bedale to Stokesley via Northallerton Services 80/89 seem to be the main relevant ones).

There was another piece in local paper The Northern Echo has this last week: http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/ne..._money_to_put_heritage_railway_back_on_track/

Thanks, not entirely sure what motivated that post, but I'm sure it'll be useful to somebody, :)

Public transport from Northallerton to Leeming Bar (for the Wensleydale Railway) is quite good, but finishes early. On Mondays to Saturdays Dales & District Service 73, Northallerton to Bedale leaves from opposite Northallerton Railway Station (the stop just over the road) every half-hour from approximately 0800 to 1830 (specifically at 09 and 39 minutes past each hour from 0909 to 1639). The journey time to Leeming Bar is approximately 15 minutes. The stop in Leeming Bar is opposite the White Rose public house and from there it is a couple of minutes walk back round the corner to the Wensleydale Railway Station. Return buses leave Leeming Bar White Rose at 10 and 40 minutes past each hour until 1810 - the 1810 is the last bus. If you are of an age where you need to pay bus fares, a day return Northallerton to Leeming Bar was £4.10 when I last did it in the Autumn.

It's quite well hidden, but this leaflet on the website:
    http://www.wensleydalerail.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/WR-8pp-Timetable-2013-printed-copy.pdf
does give you the bus service numbers from Northallerton to Leeming Bar.
However, this leaflet does not seem to be linked to by the rest of the website! I found it by googling for "wensleydale railway leaflet" because I knew it existed (I think it was linked to in the past).

Hadn't seen much about the repair work to the slip on the Wensleydale, but I was pleased to see that they will back operating over the affected section from 15 April - https://www.facebook.com/wensleydalerailway - although it appears that their extension to Northallerton West will be delayed as a consequence
