Suspect its likely to be 30053 (arriving back from the South Devon today), with 34028 spare. 6695 is stopped for washout, 34070 is coming back together now and 80104 still stopped for repair.

As a point of interest, all services over the next 2 weekends will be operating in and out of the bay platform, No.1 at Swanage due to drainage works in platform No.2. Its not often we run normal, scheduled steam services in there (normally only on gala events and when there are charters), so it'll be something a bit different. Gives the 350's a bit of work shunt-releasing arrivals as well!

Many thanks for this update. I suspect I'll be along on Saturday, despite the disappointing weather forecast. Nothing like a day at the seaside to cheer the soul!

Just to confirm that, as suspected it will be 30053 this weekend, subject to the usual caveats.

Can anyone say what they'll be fitted with? It would be interesting to know if there's some kind of derogation involved as with the NYMR to Whitby, reducing the equipment needed but limiting their use.

Can I just clarify that this isn't the unit for the Wareham service; this is being done for internal SR services, as the unit is currently used.

Could they in fact be used on services to Wareham? I thought 1st generation DMUs were withdrawn to to crashworthiness concerns except in special circumstances?

Apparently, 117s are not "first generation" and "mark 1 or similar".
Apparently 117s are in the same category as Mark 2s.....

Really? I always likened them to mk 1s, haven't the middle cars been converted to normal mk 1s before?

Yep, 117s aren't officially classed as mk1 stock so the mk1 ban does not apply to them. Bit of a loophole perhaps, but dorset county council wouldnt have bought three class 117 units if they werent suitable for the job.

Although the dcc units have now been sold, the swanage railways own class 117 is to be used for the wareham services.

Am I right in saying the bubble car is also to be used on the wareham services.

I was expecting someone else to have replied to this who knew the details but here's my attempt at an explanation of why it's not a loophole.

The mk1 ban isn't a mk1 ban. It's a ban on coaches built in a specific way of which mark 1s were the most numerous example. I think it relates to having a separate underframe and then building the coach body on top of it. The issue being that the body can come off the underframe in an accident.

Later designs (including the 117s) are built in a more integrated way and are believed to hold together in accidents where a a mark 1 would come apart. Anyway, 117s aren't a loophole. They are genuinely built differently.

Hopefully someone who knows more about this will correct the mistakes I have doubtless made.

    JP
