A greatly appreciated comment. (And I don't mean the SLOA point!). If it has now been sorted out having already been told by SD that there was a problem then many thanks to you for the info and whoever was responsible for restoring confidence to the system. That must mean this is a rare occasion when a decent piece of information has come first through Nat Pres rather than stutter its way into the public domain through far less 'official' routes. Thanks again.

Confirmation of the reinstated steam section just received from Steam Dreams. Given that we are prone to carp about almost anything on this Forum, as someone affected by Saturday - meaning I parted with money for the day - can I thank West Coast and Steam Dreams for delivering on this trip. I don't know when steam last headed north out of Southend but I think we might need to look in a history book or two to find out.

Thanks. Not recently then. Interesting that no one has tried to repeat the Coaster trip as it's unusual and a nice short day.

Yes, it's an excellent result, and we have to thank JS for his contribution to the thread, and in making sure the product that was advertised is the one delivered, :)

Massive rewrite of the SWT timetable on Saturday because of the engineering work at Waterloo. So Britannia gets the main line to Salisbury from Woking, it seems. That said, they don't seem in a hurry to get us there as we have to trundle down behind a stopper after Worting. Over 75 minutes for 60 odd miles non stop feels like there won't be much chance for the Brit to stretch her legs. At least the return path doesn't pose the same problem.

A short video of the Brit passing Walworth Crossing earlier today, just outside of Andover.

Thanks for posting. Disappointing to see box on back. I wonder why that had to be.

Left Salisbury two or three minutes late. A few snaps here ...

Incidentally - kudos to the station staff at Salisbury who are always very amenable to allowing you through the barriers and onto the platform for free whenever there is a steam special. There must have been thirty or forty people watching the train go, and by the looks, the vast majority were just regular people come to see the train rather than photographers or gricers.

I'm puzzled as to why someone would be disappointed about a box being on the back of a train they weren't travelling on,or I assume didn't go out to see.

You assume correctly. When I am trying to decide which steam trips to book(I do 4 or 5 a year normally) I am anxious to try and get on one which does not have the dreaded box on the back. The reason for my post was that hopefully someone would say what the operational reason was for why this trip had to have the box. I would then know not to book on a similiar trip in the future.

I do hope that this is not too "puzzling" for you?!

Nice run down after we had escaped from nth London line. Good climb to mp 31.but rubbish path beyond Basin. They even stopped us to let the late running slow Salisbury service out. Return had a storming assault of Enham Bank and a nice dash through Woking on the slow. We had to take the DL as there was no time to drop it off at Willesden that had been the plan.

From what I saw the Box was doing most of the work. The Brit appeared to be in light steam.

    Edit: here is the vid,

Well a quick look on uk steam shows it was highly likely to be towing a box and thus adding to the joy of the trip :)

Isn't the Class 47 used to facilitate turning the train at Salisbury?

Anyway, I'm experimenting with the video facility on my camera and have put the result on Flickr. However, I can't seem to be able to get the link to work, but if you go onto the Photostream you should find it :

Try copying and pasting into your browser if you can't make the link work either!
