For me also no contest, 34007, clean or dirty, and which machine has cost the less to restore and keep in working order, but then 34007 was not in the care of a certain gentlemen who shall we say tends to like spending other peoples money and ends up as a wreck ?

So advanced that the majority of its class and its larger brethren were rebuilt into conventional 3-cylinder Pacifics like the one on the left...

Well, that is precisely why they were so advanced. Materials technology had yet to catch up with some of the concepts incorporated. Many of the issues that plagued the types in service have only recently been ironed out with improvements in materials etc. I'm sure there's a bit more to go in the combination lever department, as a couple have sheared in the last ten years. This defence also indicates where my allegiances lie. Nothing can touch them on account of distinctiveness and innovation in spite of their foibles.

    Love them both!
    Both designers have GNR/LNER heritage.
I wonder how OVSB's designs may have ended up if built at Doncaster.

Well, the one on the right is basically a V2 in a box, so it makes sense to favour the Gresley machine. ;)

I love a good debate, the picture really does give a good comparison; what is more amazing is we can still recreate the image (Well when scotsman is back from overhaul)

Well, you're unlikely to find one in this thread, just a collection of statements of prejudice!

At least they're "adhesionless overly complicated unreliable pacifics" with tender doors and don't break your back when firing... ;)

Are you therefore inferring that whatever reason you use to choose, even if it's neither of the above, it's a statement of prejudice?o_O

Ok magnificent tender doors and firehole position....is that really all they have that's better than the Nobleman or fortified stately home implied?

Unlike western engines you dont have to be a deformed drawf to fire a west country, if you want a profile of a western fireman, think quasimodo and at least on a west country you have such things as electric lights , 2 gauge glasses, and your on the correct side of the cab,

But you do have to be fit enough to keep the firebox fed, and who says which side of the cab is the correct one?
