    Bashing the whole of Network Rail because of a few problems with charter trains is rather over the top. We now have the safest network in our history. Who would you rather ran the network? Railtrack?

    It is not just a few issues with charter trains though is it. In my area there have been several large civil engineering projects that have been badly planned and have gone wrong. The latest is where they have tried to change an embankment level and have ended up with a landslip and are now having to rebuild an embankment. At a public meeting a Civil Engineer with years of experience tried to explain to them that their plans were impractical but the condescending, smug and self satisfied engineer in charge explained their plans were fine. The experienced engineer explained to this fool what would happen. He was correct, the Engineer from NR was wrong and should have listened to the voice of (30 years ) experience.

    Look at all the gauging issues NR have, not just with charters but with freight where they have failed to maintain clearances, and the way they leave signal conduit with out covers on so it suffers from water ingress, the amount of rubbish on the track-sides, the problems with level crossings and you just cannot help but think here is an incompetent organisation, and that it is more by luck than judgement that there has not been a serious incident following some of their decisions.

    I spoke to the driver of the diesel at Carlisle, he said that the engine was running to provide ETH but he would not be providing and motive power at all, unless Gordon requested. He added the chance of that was snowball in hell........;)
