Whilst on the subject, Could anyone possibly shed some light on why the tour departed York 31 minutes late this morning?

^ superb Henry - Had lunch at this location around 2 and the weather was atrocious! Decided to move further down to allow time to get the K4 out of Battersby as well. (below)

Two great shots there Richard. I really like them both. Is a slightly more panoramic crop on the first one worth a try to remove the shadow in the foreground?

Just looked at the RTT info. Looks like the K4 was late off the NRM, but lots of recovery times were built into the schedule too?

Yes there were a few allowances in the timetable. I am curious though as to why the K4 departed the NRM late in the first place, especially when the tour arrived at York 3 early.

The vagaries of the local signalling at York are well known.....

    A Thingy...
Points failure at NRM/NR interface and lack of despatch staff were the two culprits for the late departure. Despite this, a good trip, and it stayed predominantly dry at the other end. Aside from 61264 slipping badly at Battersby outward and a shower between Whitby and Danby that caused further slipping, the trip was very scenic and enjoyable. Because of the late departure from York, NR decided against doing the coupling of 61264 at Darlington North Road to save time. However, the need to wait for service trains to depart meant that we retained the deficit despite NR's deliberations, and we departed Darlington Bank Top 45 mins late. Almost unbelievably, and a possible testament to the excellent margin for error embedded within the timetable, we arrived at Whitby only c. 7 minutes late. A badly clinkered fire and lack of platform capacity were the reasons for the late arrival at York.

G Boreham's video shows that the B1 did some work when it was at the back but, when it was leading, the K4 at the back did very little; which was how it sounded (or rather didn't sound) from where I was near the K4's end of the train. That suggests that the K4's poor coal was causing trouble all day.

We were seriously worried when we stopped, not at a signal, a few miles north of York and the engine crew could be seen shovelling some of the fire onto the lineside. But it turned out that they were only clearing some clinker, and we were on the move again after a while.
