NLR passenger brake at Swindon & Cricklade Railway

Following correspondence with the vintage carriage group on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway, a number has been found stamped inside the door post of the half-body section of their NLR pasenger brake.

The number found was
16
7
The seven is deliberately stamped below the 16, even though there is ample room to have stamped the digits in one line as 167.

Can anyone provide any further information about the possible identity of the coach?

Could be coach No. 16 door No. 7.

Have a look at its opposite number. If it's the same system used at Swindon the doors will be numbered in sequence around the vehicle. So door 1 will be opposite door 8, door 2 opposite door 7 etc.

Other components may bear the vehicle number. Examples I've seen on GW stock include door vents, garnish rails, door cladding boards (inside face) etc. Basically anything that was mass produced on the bench, then fitted (or 'shot in') to the vehicle on the shop floor & especially anything that was then removed for polishing like picture frames etc. Sometimes these are only in pencil or chalk, but number stamps are common too as are Roman numerals made with a chisel. Pencil marks can be very hard to spot or read as they're often covered with ingrained soot (especially on door furniture). If there's a hint of anything like that don't attempt to clean it with anything other than a soft brush & then view it under different lighting if possible; the pencil marks will often catch the light enough to be read.

Thanks. That sounds quite likely. Unfortunately there is only one surviving original door, so there is no way of checking the others.

Does anyone know anything about NLR coach 16 (e.g. year built, diagram etc.)?

A shame that only one door has survived, but I'd expect to see corresponding numbers stamped into the bodyside door pillars.
