What an excellent selection of pictures Andrew, they really show the scenery of the coast line.
Edit, Andrew it's Gordon Hodgson, Gordon Jackson is the actor.....

Find it very disappointing the lack of scenic shots of the line. The time of day seemed to give the chance for some still shots on the coastal section
Andrews shots show the potential but maybe there is a lack of interest photting-wise.

Ralph - I was in coach D. Part of the reason I travel on railtours is that, in the air-conditioned era, their opening windows provide the only possibility of photographing their routes. In case they are of interest my other railtour photos are here (steam and diesel):

Thanks Andrew, I was just wondering which of the many photters at windows you were. Must have passed you many times during the day as I went about my 'arduous' duties.

I travelled up the West Cumbrian Coast yesterday, from Barrow to Carlisle, and agree with what has been said on this thread it is a really good scenic route for the normal traveller to enjoy, and also for line side photographers, as a steam charter.
You get the chance to see the fells, farmland, sand dunes, large river estuaries, and get really close to the shoreline, where there was a low speed restriction, which gave the traveller time to admire both land and sea.
Would have thought the southbound route would be the best option, as with the sun setting in the west you would get the best of the days sunlight.

One of the best scenic routes in the north. But another consideration is flooding risk. It was closed for a week or so this January. Not the most resilient of lines. They would need a Plan B.

As Henry was bemoaning the lack of still shots on the scenic sections,I attach a couple from Nethertown.
Not a lot of photters around, the strong westerly was a problem and Eskmeals viaduct was covered in sheeting

Thank you thats just what I was looking for. I also agree with the previous post regarding the Southbound run being best for passengers and light for photters.

Sad that only one of them is still alive. Long live OUR Gordon!

Peter, on another lovely sunny morning in Manchester, before we revert to typical Easter weather

Yes I'll second Ralph's comment - an excellent series of shots really showing the line at its best; many thanks for providing an insight into what looked like a very enjoyable tour to be on.

I'd almost forgotten how pleasant chasing steam around the Cumbrian Coast can be; mile after mile of twisting roads, including the delights of Corney Fell, campervans and the ever difficult decision of will it be quicker through Broughton or via Foxfield; I can't think of a more relaxing way to spend a Saturday ;)

You state that Ulverston is a significant climb going North, do you have a rough idea where the climbing starts from or ends ? Is the line still climbing as it runs through the station ?

The climb starts around Plumpton Junction area and continues quite steeply through the station and gradually eases up to the summit at Lindal, about 3 1/2 miles later

Does any kind soul have a gradient profile for the Cumbrian Coast Line?? Or know where to find one?
