Well like I said I have only been to a couple of departments (CanPac, Wednesday Gang and the Wagon Group) and there are a lot of Daves!

If you read the Mid Hants news stuff even that makes reference to the many Daves
    http://www.watercressline.co.uk/article.php/556/wagon-group-report-3-february - 2 of the wagon
    http://www.watercressline.co.uk/article.php/557/disaster-at-ropley-no-power-for-tea-urn - Another 2 Daves
    http://www.watercressline.co.uk/archive/News/Carriage/View/1111.html - Another Dave
Plus the Dave I work with on CanPac its just something silly I noticed

EDIT: Should point out I didnt see the video on my phone originally and didnt see the only fools video but that is probably about right!

Does anyone have any experience of volunteering on the Middleton Railway at all- they are about the closest to me?

I have some experience of volunteering on another railway and cleaning/general odds and sods/a little bit on the footplate. Im handy with a set of spanners and can weld (have done quite a bit on landrovers- not quite the same scale I know). Very keen to learn any engineering stuff.....

I was working on a project several years ago and was told to ask for 'Dangerous Dave'. I asked why he was known as that and was told: 'Haven't you realised, all Dave's are dangerous.' I've come to realise that, although there are exceptions, there's a lot of truth in that!

A number of members and volunteers at the Garw Valley Railway live either in Cardiff or in the Vale of Glamorgan, rather than in the Garw itself or Bridgend. If anyone in the Cardiff/Vale of Glamorgan area is interested in helping us, I'm sure we can arrange lifts (email me on andygarw@gmail.com).

My names karl i only started recently volenteering at the MHR. I plan to try and visit more when work permits but i do not currently drive so i intend to catch the train to alton or to catch the Bus from Guildford bus stop to Ropley.

But if anyone lives in guildford and does currently drive i would be intrested and would put money towards fuel and such. I am also 24 if any one is intrested then do drop me a pm!

I'm sure that there must be someone who can pick you up from guildford, or alton, Great group of people, you do need a thick skin and a sence of humour though, have you thought about putting a note in the lobby ?

Yeah they are a great group of people! No i have not thought about putting a note in the lobby yet as i am pretty new so still getting my head around the yard and such. But that will be on my to do list.
Should be next down this friday so will think about doing that friday. But i thought in the mean time putting a forum post up was also a good idea.

I am perfectly capable of getting to the railway bus services and such but if there are others that travel from close by then it could work out cheaper and likely quicker as the bus service from guildford seems to take about an hour or just over.

GWSR is holding its first recruitment fair over the weekend 21st-22nd March, click here to find out more. As I understand it, a number of the department representatives at Winchcombe will be based in the carriage and wagon workshops over the weekend. I will hopefully be representing C+W for at least one day, if there are any younger people that want to find out more about volunteering not in the youth group but in a proper department then PM me and I'll try and make a specific day, not sure if I could commit to the whole weekend yet! the whole site won't be open for general walking around but if someone is specifically interested in say welding then they are quite welcome to take a look at the equipment we have under guidance.

Have you ever wanted to work on steam locos? The Bluebell Railway is always looking to recruit new volunteers into the loco department, particularly new entrants to the operating side. As a new recruit, you would start as a cleaner (which involves not only cleaning, but also regular footplate turns to learn the art of firing). To volunteer, you must be a Bluebell Railway Preservation Society member; aged 16 or over; and to progress you would need to pass a medical. If you show suitable aptitude and commitment, you could progress to fireman and ultimately to driver. We can't offer any pay, but in compensation we can offer incomparable variety: on what other railway could you work on an a mid-19th century 0-4-0T industrial tank engine one day, and a BR standard the next? Full training is provided. See http://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/loco_vol.html for more details.

We would encourage anyone interested in joining to attend one of the regular "find out more days" where you will get the opportunity to tour the locomotive department and speak to existing volunteers. The next such day is June 12th - this coming Sunday, and then every second Sunday each month until November 13th (booking required - see http://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/vol/vbbb01.htm). Alternatively, email the Loco Department Cleaners' roster clerk to find out more at bbcleanersroster@aol.com
