Which is all well and good if you want to build a replica of an early LSWR engine. But not at all relevant to the Clans which were Scottish region engines.

The unavaoidable fact is that the Clans were not associated with names apart from the Clan-based names that they received. They were not associated with Southern England or LSWR lines. They were not associated with the East Midlands, or indeed for that matter any other part of England (with the possible exception of Crewe where they were built).

This is just one of those issues for which there isn't a right answer.... but for the sake of some paint and a nameplate it can be whatever 72xxx locomotive you want it to be - not withstanding that a BR 1d outline tender is planned, don't know whether the handholds versus rails on the Smoke deflectors has even been worried about yet plus one or two other changes ( visible or otherwise) that will make 72010 distinct from her original sisters...

Oh dear. We need to read up on the history of the class don't we young man. Don't think that he bothered to take your advice Mr Spamcan 81.

The B.R. Standard Class 6 locomotives - sometimes known as "Clans", were allocated to Polmadie - that would be in Glasgow, Scotland - and Kingmoor, over the border in, er, England!!

At Kingmoor, they ranged far and wide to all points of the compass and were used extensively on the services to Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Crewe, right up until their withdrawal. In 1958, one even worked out of Liverpool Street - that would be in London - on trains to Norwich - which is probably in Norfolk.

    Oh dear, indeed.

    Cheers

    Alan

Hengist was the intended name for 72010, which had the mis-fortune to not be built. If it was the intention to number the loco in honour of one of the earlier engines, then a Clan name would be most suitable. This isn't the case though. If you want a Class 6 named as a Clan, maybe you'd better start a movement to build one. No doubt the Hengist guys would let you use their drawings and patterns for aconsideration.

Pretty sure that there is a photo somewhere of a Clan doubleheading with a Hall somewhere in the Midlands.

I remember one got as far as Sheffield Midland, but can't say if it was normal service or a special.

It's not mandatory of course but anyone who has bothered to read up on the Clans will know that further batches were to be built to work elsewhere, especially on the Southern region. It would seem that this has passed Mr May by. As others have pointed out, 72010 Hengist almost came into existence under BR.

I suppose if TonyMay wants a new Scottish Clan, then a small donation of, let us say, £5m or so should see Hengist finished and Horsa, Canute, Wildfire and Firebrand built, so he can then get on with fundraising for Clan Colquhoun ... ;)

Indeed the frames were built according to Wiki and therefore officially the loco existed by the usual measure of the frames holding the id of the loco. Hengist as a name is just as legitimate as a Clan replica in that case.

A pretty good idea! The group wanted to build the next vacant number in line, it so happened that that number was already allocated a name that was off-subject, and they decided to run with it. That deserves credit, not derision, as it would have been all too easy just to say 'to hell with it' and pick a Clan-based name. If people want to see it occasionally run with a 'Clan' name, then that gives the owning group leverage to request money. If people are willing to pay for the privilege, then all power to their elbows, and the group will benefit. However, they are to be commended for remaining true to the original intentions of BR.

On 24 March 1963, 72008 Clan Macleod took a special from Leeds to Oxley, where 7929 Wyke Hall was added for the short trip to Tyseley (I think; my memory has faded somewhat!). This had been billed as the ‘Clan – King – Hall’ Railtour, and it had been intended to bring a King to Leeds on the return leg. The run was due to take place in January, but was postponed to March, by which time the last King had just been withdrawn.

I've always thought they looked sleeker than a 'Brit', regardless of the pros and cons of their performance on the road.

Clan MacMermaid ? aka Nessie ? . Interesting that 72008 still has at least one Fluted rod not the plain ones that were supposed to have been fitted...

I always thought the 'Clans' retained fluted rods to the end, despite the 'Brits' being fitted with the revised plain versions.
