It would make sense....................... BUT according to UK Steam, 5029 should still be at Bristol with 34046 as the LE move yesterday was cancelled..................... though the was a move from Par to Southall yesterday!

For the second diesel. There is a video of the departure from Exeter in the GB thread, which shows it topped and tailed heading for Truro.

I did think that, but the 75 mph made me wonder......................... same as tomorrows is timed for the same. I still think 5029 is down in Bristol and will move from there to TYS nearer the time - it would make sense!

Well, what ever it is tomorrow, I for one will not be going out to see it, I'd never get to Iver in time unless I left at 5am...................... this tube strike is causing traffic mayhem (as usual) round these parts, the local roads were still gridlocked at 10:30 this morning with traffic still trying to get on to or over the A40!!!

Its easy when you know how Lol! ;)

Easiest way is to choose detailed search and pick say Southall by typing that in the location box. next click on the drop down menu for what time and select 00:00 - 23:59. next unclick WTT & VAR which just leaves STP, then select the date you want and the click submit, and the next thing you see are the STP's either stopping at or passing through - Simples!! ;):)

    Hope that helps!

You need to be a little more direct than that, otherwise you could miss stuff.

Firstly and most importantly, you need to know the depot or shed names. For example Locos based at Southall are Southall Wcr or Southall Loco Services Ltd. Tyseley is Tyseley Steam Trust or Tyseley TMD. Sometimes you also need to know where preserved railways join Network Rail, usually at a Ground Frame - The Swanage Railway for example joins Network Rail at Motala Ground Frame now known on the planning system as Swanage Railway Motala GF.

So in summary - you need to know where the locos are likely to surface, then use DD's search argument on RTT as above. I do it slightly differently using the TOC tag (WCR or DB) to cut out all the service train movements and highlight the ones I am after. As Southall is near to me I scan RTT every morning / evening to see whats happening, If i know there is a gala on I scan the depots and the gala location GF.

    Not necessarily Jeff!

I find that a nearby location catches more than trying to be too specific - each to their own Lol!! ;)

If you put in just Southall then using WR as the TOC tag, note it's not WCR, then it selects only those involving the West Coast depot.

Only if you know where they are going! Its possible for stuff going west out of Southall to miss Southall Station by using the goods loop. By using the depots you miss nothing. Except of course when they slap things on with two hours notice!!!!!! The dreaded VSTP (Very Short Term Planning)

Southall Loco Services uses WC as its TOC. As we know Clan Line and Tornado are usually operated by DB

Oh and it helps to have a really good track atlas. I use the Track Atlas of Mainland Britain (2nd edition) published by Platform 5. Gives heritage railway - NR boundary locations / names.

5029 is indeed still at Bristol, and its next train will be from Westbury. Moves such as this to Tyseley TMD (ie the London Midland depot) are not usually steam. Maybe something going for tyre turning ?

On reflection it is going to Tyseley TMD and not Tysleley Steam Trust, so it probably is something for some maintenance operation as you suggest.

Thank you for this James - very good to know, as so many plans for this spring and summer depended upon some progress on this.

Just down the road from Coombe Fishacre would be about right if both run to time?

I tried to get Western Champion & Tornado passing each other. I ended up 30 seconds and 1/2 a mile out. Came to the conclusion its near impossible to ensure you are in the right spot.
