In view of the 4472 debacle why not a new build Gresley A1!

Woops I see Tobbes got in before me. :)

Actually I wonder how much you'd have to change - as 1470 it would be out of gauge most everywhere.

This is a lot of froth. Harmless though it is.

Tornado group need to build things that will be useful to the future of preservation. Ones that will help when older engines are more worn. Not just bring back old designs and try to tweak them for the diehards that want to see them.

An L1, J39, J25 and B16 are the obvious ones to go for. Though if we are making improvements an NER style smokebox door will improve the appearance of an L1 considerably...

Well the rational choice is clearly more Peppercorn A1s, as the best of the final generation of British express locomotives, and not to mess about with with P2s or anything else. 3 A1s with 4 boilers and a reasonable spares stock would be the most efficient way of doing heavy duty main line steam, perhaps coupled with purpose built lightweight support coaches that have capacity for a couple of thousand gallons of water as well as the other essentials. But then if we were truly being rational perhaps we wouldn't mess with steam at all.

I said on the 45699 thread that out of the choices apparently on offer, the V4 would get my vote, so no surprise then that I just voted for the V4. The design just looks right to me, and would suit heritage lines as well main line duties.

However, I have an image in my mind of a line up in about 15 years time featuring 60163, 2007 and 60700. That really would be something. Not sure why they couldn't build 2007 with 20" cylinders instead of the oddly chosen 19.75. I would have thought that the A1/P2 boiler design would be suitable (happy to be corrected if I'm wrong). Surely there would be a good basis of parts and patterns to do a W1?

The 19.75 is arrived at by compensating for the increased Boiler pressure - the A1 style boiler is 250psi not the 22o or 225 that the original P2's operated at- whilst arriving at the Superlative tractive effort figure . it also keeps the width down using a derivative of the A1/A3 Cylinder drawing... and wont it be 60703 ?

I think I would rather see a new P1, than a P2 or any of the others mentioned!- What a machine!

Rather heavy on fuel apparently so without modifications it would be a tad expensive to run.

The P1 design was saddled with short travel valve gear. Why they were not modified to the later long travel O2 type is a little odd, but since slow, heavy freight was their main sphere of work there was no urgent need to change. The frames gave little trouble and given the chance they could run quite well. I recall reading that Bill Hoole felt them to be superior to a 9f.
