In that case (and at the risk of being accused of hypocrisy after my last post), congratulations Stuart!

I presume you are the Stuart Reeder in Taunton wearing a white cap? If so your profile is still pretty public. Along the top is an icon that is three lines with a padlock. Click on this and on the menu select "Who Can See My Stuff" and then "What do other people see on my Timeline : View As" and you will see what we the unwashed masses can see.

Yep, that's done it although obviously your cover photo and any comments on that stay public.

So how's it going with the project Stuart? Any members yet? It seems like you've got a good excuse now to round all this malarkey up with the reason of lack of time, and put all of these fantasies to bed.

He's not doing anything helpful whatsoever in 2859's name or preservation I'm general, if you doubt that I'd suggest you do a trawl through this thread and all other threads to which Stuart has contributed, that should give you an idea. And whilst he's having a go and failing it is even less likely a serious group will get to it and perhaps restore it to steam. It also gives the loco a bad name, when he eventually gives up any later attempt to restore it will have this failure hanging over, whoever's doing the restoration then I'd imagine would have to explicitely say "this is nothing to do with Stuart reeder, don't worry!"

On the plus side this evening I learnt about Alf Roberts, a wonderful character who's far, far worse than Stuart.

Ahh well if it wernt for stuart we wouldn't even have a thread on 2859 would we. For all his faults ( of which you all tell me are many) it would be still sat at llangollen without a word said for it. Im sure if a mr hoskin or smith were to do something were to do something then there will be no word of mr reeder but for now let a man have a dream ( how ever daft it may seem) and stop jumping on there backs . Dnt forget the movement is gonna need young people like you me and him in the future.

The youth argument is a strong one but the truth is you need both youth and experience on your team.

A locomotive like 2859 can be brought back to life. Witness the amazing transformation of GWR No 4270 recently outshopped at Toddington on the GWSR. 2859 is not the most difficult ex-Barry loco to restore; her boiler is, by all accounts, one of the better ones in preservation and its a Swindon Standard No 1, shared with other 28xxs, 2884s and Halls so there are a few about. The Churchward 3500 gallon tender is also not too rare a type and several have been virtually built from scratch (at least above the chassis). As several of this class of loco are preserved, there are people out there, myself included to some extent, who know a little about restoring them and patterns exist for the manufacture of several replacement parts. For the time being, its safe enough at Llangollen I guess. The main problem that any Facebook restorer has is moving from the dream phase to the reality phase. To do so requires a team (even if you bankroll the restoration yourself and this would be around £250K for 2859 I would think), a project plan, a suitable secure base and 15 years of hard work before it comes anywhere close to be ready to steam. Fitting the boiler cladding to a GWR boiler is a nightmare in itself but it clearly is done!

There was an old RAF advert which springs to mind showing, if I remember, a Lightning Jet at full chat in a blue sky. Underneath it said, "If you want to dream, cut out the picture, if you want to fly, cut out the application form." The second option is much, much more difficult but much more rewarding. That's the difference between people who dream on Facebook about setting up "empires" and people who get down to their local heritage railway and clean rusty bits off locomotives for years.

2859 was never under threat as far as I know. If I have got it right, this guy has picked a stored loco and arranged a Society (of sorts) to rescue it without actually contacting the owner.

That is my understanding, who is it owned by, the railway, or someone else?

It is owned by shareholders, associated with the Llangollen GWR loco Group, who also own 5532.

It's owned by the GWR Loco Group who also own, and are concentrating on, 5532 and hence 2859 is up for sale.

Ahh yes, I remember now, it's buried in this thread somewhere!

I think he has contacted them, as a while ago there was a figure of £38k floating around for its purchase...?
