Long while since I've visited Boston Lodge so no idea how much space they've got but a standard gauge Garratt is a LOT bigger than the SG carriage they worked on. Then you've got the fun of getting this beast on a low loader.

    Sound argument Ralph,
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though so i still think Garratts are ugly and weird looking. though the wee ones on the WHR easier on the eye than the Huge ones

I agree on both fronts. Garrets are awesome locomotives. When it comes to Joe public though they think non-articulated w/tender.

I think you'll find that Stanier cancelled the last order for Hughes / Fowler Crabs and replaced it with his own design incorporating taper boiler - hence the description as "Stanier" Crabs

Sorry but have to disagree - although I accept the LMS derivate "bodged" by Fowler may fit your description. A visit to the Welsh Highland to sample its NGG16 fleet may change your mind BUT - if not - I'm afraid there's no hope for you !

Seeing a GMAM in full cry would have convinced just about any disbeliever.

:(...More effective than punishment, or so the chap on the speed awareness course said.
Perhaps a Garratt with Air smoothed casing on (so it looks less like a boiler on a well wagon with two railmotor power bogies on steroids at either end ) so it looks like a class 20 deisel (with two railmotor power bogies on steroids at either end ..... ) would look ok.... no, you're right i am a no hoper....

Would you actually need a Garratt for the work? Obviously we are into fantasy territory here , but if the need is for 8 * 5'8 driving wheels on an articulated chassis then wouldn't Mallet style articulation do the job?

Mind you I tried sketching something using the GW kit of parts, because I'm not familiar with more regionally appropriate design, but it proved remarkably ugly, and started to look very heavy. It seems to be quite a difficult design proposition because a 2-4-4-2T really needs to be as long as a 2-10-2T if you are going to have all the cylinders facing forward as seems conventional for the Mallet style. Obviously this design business is really rather difficult. If you could put up with 4'8 driving wheels then two small prairie chassis under a Castle boiler would probably be quite potent, but also a very big and expensive locomotive.

Not a Garratt and possibly a bit heavy for the Mallaig Extension but you could always have one of these. :)

4014 is getting every ounce of UP steam money at the moment. 844/3985 , Steve Lee and Bob Krieger are probably not very happy at the moment for all the love sweat and tears they put into keeping the 2 steamers going. The new manager has not been doing the necessary work to keep 844 and 3985 up to today's high standards. It is a controversial subject at the moment.

I also have doubts that something similar may happen to big boy.

I hope this thread goes back to a Galatea/ Scots Guardsmen thread. There is a bunch of good buzz going on around these locomotives. Also, developments out of Carnforh have been going great so far this year.

And being hauled by one from George through the Montague Pass to the passing loop for a return journey - 2 hours of sheer pleasure !

Now if the WCRC boys could re-gauge the GO in MOSI for use on the Cumbrian Coast line !!!!

Bringing this thread back on topic, 46115 and 45699 certainly were in form last weekend, and here's my video of these two at their first heritage railway gala. It was my first time seeing 45699, and I'm rather impressed...

I was on that trip with 1009. After seeing it static in the old open air museum at Redbank for many years, it was a thrill to see it in operation.
Sadly, it has been static again for a long time with little prospect of restoration. But at least it is under cover.

I have a photo somewhere of 1009 at Fisherman's Island during that trip and you would swear that the bright white sand looks like snow. Snow is one thing you don't see here in Brisbane.

To bring this back on topic, I last saw 45699 as a hulk for spares at Carnforth in 1986. Things have changed a bit since then...........
