Apparently it won't polish out. Interesting artefact of its dormant period

Makes you wonder what environmentally unfriendly solvent was in the marker that was used, doesn't it?

I wonder if in fact it wasn't deliberately not polished out - a subtle artifact of the loco's history?

No, I took a lot of photos in Herston while the loco was being assembled, and I don't think anyone noticed it; it appeared when the loco was used on the SVR and the slide bars became oily.

Ivatt Class 2 41313 has some words scratched into the tyre wall of one of the main wheelsets, displaying a very non-PC attitude - 'W**S Out!'. Possibly done whilst the loco was at Barry between 66 and 75. It had to be painted out as it was clearly visible to visitors in the new Train Story building where it is now on display.

In my mind, it raises more questions than it answers.

Firstly, who painted it? Everyone seems to be assuming it is BR-era. But would it have been an official mark, or a bit of shed graffiti? What operational reason would necessitate painting it on? If it is official, presumably some kind of note to make sure it ended up in the right place? And why choose the slide bar, rather than, say, the cylinder cover or cab side?

Also, are there any contemporary photos showing the writing in place, on this or other locos, either at Barry or (better still) pre-Barry? There are plenty of Barry-era photos of locos daubed with the identity of the new owning group, but of the photos I've seen it seems to be painted on to some of the plate work somewhere - so what is the precedent for marking up part of the motion in this way?

It doesn't have to be BR - it could mean that it's been sold with Mr Woodham's authority to confirm it.

That sounds more plausible than a BR-origin: a kind of not-so-subtle "hands off" to other groups thinking of liberating bits of motion. Though I'd still have thought marking up the coupling or connecting rods would have been better - more obvious and also parts that are easier to remove than the slide bars.

Are there equivalent marks on the other side?

Would be interesting if anyone has a Barry-era photo showing the marks in situ.

I think there is some writing on the slide bars in this one:

Maybe it refers to the slidebar specifically and not the loco?Could it have been that the slidebar was bought or reserved as a separate component but never collected or taken off?
