That's reserved for A4s Sir. Any suggestion to the contrary will result in a visit from "the Management."

British Railways used Middle Chrome Green until 1956, and after that they used Deep Bronze Green.

Neither of which would be suitable for a P2. :)

I always understood that the post 1928 GWR green described as "Middle Chrome Green" was exactly the same shade as used by B.R. both pre and post 1956 - it was just called "deep bronze green". AFAIK it is still available from Williamsons of Ripon to the same formula as supplied to B.R. Despite what Steam Beano and others say "Brunswick green" was never used on a GWR or BR steam loco. I heard that too. Some more food for thought here on the livery debate in 4mm form on an A4...

Here's a thought on a non livery related note though, seeing as James May's involved, would it be possible to get the rest of top gear involved in some way, Clarkson's interested in heavy engineering as we saw with his tornado race.

From the Southern Locomotives website : -
"The green livery chosen for passenger locomotives was in fact the same as that used by the Great Western Railway, with minor variations to the lining. The green colour used by the Great Western was middle chrome green and this is the colour specified by the Railway Executive with samples sent to the various paint shops. The chrome orange lining used sits very harmoniously on middle chrome green owing to their common origins. However after research into longer lasting finishes the formulation of the green was altered in 1956; this used Monastral blue and a new yellow pigment marketed by ICI and gave a slightly darker shade - nearer deep bronze green. Whether Swindon changed to this new formulation it would be interesting to know! I believe that Deep Bronze Green, produced by Willamsons of Ripon, is now used by preservationist as the best match available."

As a newby, I sense that this debate is a little tongue in cheek? :)

Seriously though, I think that 5944 is right in saying that any historically legitimate livery would be acceptable since the locomotive is a new class member, not one scrapped (sorry rebuilt) in 1944.

In reality, isn't it most likely that the trust will turn it out in a range of liveries, as they have with Tornado?

The liveries carried by Tornado are those carried by the A1 Class during their working lives. The P2s came out in Apple Green and that's that. I'm not sure they even got wartime black but any post war livery is a flight of fancy as they'd all become Thompson Pacifics by then.

Yes, but quite skilfully done! (especially for someone more generally known for his aptitude with a paintbrush, rather than photoshop...)

Must admit I'd quite like to see one in BR early blue - am I alone in thinking that, of the liveries so far carried by Tornado, the blue has been the most attractive?

In the Railway Magazine December 2013 page 20 is a photo of No.2001 taken in 1941 with its valances removed ,it looks like its in wartime black .

What, get the thing finished and then have the livery debate? Well, it's a novel suggestion, but it would certainly not be the usual way that projects proceed!

Soon you'll be telling us that the Trust's website should have page upon page of detailed technical discussion about the riding qualities of a 2-8-2 and the design changes necessary to get it to run on the modern railway, rather than the far more important plea for Facebook likes...

I hate to say it, but NO you're not!

Like you, I think BR blue would suit it no end......................... Gresley/Peppercorn Loco's seem to lend themselves quite naturally to it.

Thanks Sheff for raising the paint frothing debate!!

This summarises my thoughts. The original six class members only appeared in apple green (and maybe black). But this is a new, and seventh member so why can't we be a bit more imaginative?

Having said that, I totally agree that getting the loco built and running is the main thing, so bring that on please. If it only ever appears in apple green, then that will do for me.
