What a bizarre contrast in fate with 46464 which was preserved from BR service and now looks like a Barry wreck.

One loco that certainly fell into that category was Mirvale, the NYMR's first loco. The insurance co boiler inspector paid an un-announced visit one day when there was no one to meet him. He wrote a report to the owner saying that he had stuck his head in the firebox and it appeared that the tubeplate was bulged at the bottom, indicating broken stays and the loco should not be used until fully inspected. It never steamed again on the NYMR and was bought by Middleton some twenty years later where it was quickly put back into steam. Those broken stays and bulged firebox magically healed themselves because they are still OK today (although, admittedly the loco has not been used for a good few years.)

Sunday 8th June saw a landmark moment in the overhaul of Ivatt 2MT 46447, when Locomotive Superintendent Steve Masters lit the first fire in the boiler since December 1966, when 46447 was withdrawn by British Railways.

Great news, watching the developments on this with interest.
Will the engine ever return to the IWSR?

46447 remains to property of the IOWSR, after the loan period it could stay at the East Somerset, that is for future negotiations.

This is a very impressive thread indeed. I have also been reading the ESR mags that my Dad gets in the post. We will definitely be visiting the railway to see 46447 in action. A perfect loco for the line.

I understand that there is an article about the overhaul in the current Steam Railway magazine.

Earlier today one of the safety valves lifted for the first time, at around 195psi. The boiler inspector is due to arrive on Monday (23rd June) for the hydraulic and out of frames steam test.

That's incredible. A great job by the team on the ESR.

This is great news. I never thought this would happen and so quickly. I remember seeing 46447 (along with 42968 and 76084) regularly at Wigan Wallgate in the mid 60's. Usually acted as station pilot at NorthWestern station with a run out to Gathurst about 4 pm to collect the gunpowder wagons from the explosive factory there. She was obviously in not that bad condition when she went for scrap. Hope she ends up with an 8F shedplate.

I'm pleased to report that 46447's boiler passed both the out of frames hydraulic test and steam test today.

The target for the first steaming is during November, at which point 46447 will have been on ESR metals for 2 years.
