The newspaper is pretty unequivocal I think:

"Kent Police are investigating last night's blaze at Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway (SKLR) as arson, it has been revealed this morning."

Fire Brigade investigate this sort of thing I believe. Police no doubt are investigating to see if it is Arson. They can't know it is until a cause is found, if it is.

You're splitting hairs. The original post stated Arson, and you questioned where that had come from. The local news is reporting that the police who investigate the criminal act of arson (the fire brigade investigate cause of fires, but not the criminality associated with them where there is such criminality) and so I think oddsocks was justified in the title of this thread. The real point is that the SKLR have lost another building, which will be a huge blow to a railway that has never been as secure as they would have liked (in all meanings of secure). My thoughts to them, and if I lived a bit closer I'd take a broom down.

To clarify semantics I would mention that Fire Brigades do not use the word 'arson' when discussing a fires cause. They refer to it as being 'suspicious'.
Their choice of words, used over a long period of time, is necessary as insurers and claimants can seize upon their comments to support or deny claims or apportion blame.

I have little knowledge of this railway but they do seem to have been a target by fire raisers. Maybe some of the money destined for re-building wrecks that are not really needed or to finance hair brained re-opening schemes would be better donated to the SKLR to enable them to build more substantial structures and facilities.

Just to clarify, I took my title from the heading of the article.

    Regards, oddsocks.

If there is any financial difficulty caused by this fire, the SKLR is well deserving of a whip-round. A very worthwhile preservation and one which has had more to overcome than most people.
