Good news! Two new components have now been ordered along with 3 components for machining. Full details on the website.

Apparently the Lempor diagrams arent dimensionally accurate yet, which is just as well. A Clan wont look right with a Bullied bucket on.
There is at least a precedent for fitting double chimneys to standards that needed a bit more umph which should allow that tall narrow characteristic Clan chimney silhouette to be retained ...end on at least

We're looking forward to seeing the simulation data on the different exhaust systems arrangements. As shown the preliminary figures show the possibility of exceeding average Class 7 IHP and an increase from 9 carriages over Shap at 40mph to 12 carriages over Shap at 42mph. 3 extra carriages with say 72 people in each paying £50 is an extra £10,500 income (assuming 100% occupancy for simplicity).

So theoretically better than a Brit, but still below a WC/BB in power output. Extra power margin is always the way to go as it can help get you out of trouble, although it can be a bit of a blessing and a curse, as the Class 7P5F Bulleids were and are sometimes expected to perform Class 8 diagrams on a more regular basis. It would be interesting to see if the various modifications to the exhaust can fit into the original chimney outline and still produce improvements in efficiency and output. Although merely speaking from an aesthetic perspective, I'd imagine a Clan would lose something of its original lean, rakish appearance if fitted with a double chimney. Were there plans to trial a double chimney in the BR period?

Yes still well below WC/BB IHP!
One of the problems with the original Clan is it looked like a Brit so it sometimes ended up with Class 7 loads as well. The plans we are using (BR Lot 242) do include some drafting changes and it was something BR were already modifying by reducing the blast pipe diameter. The Clans never made it down to Rugby testing station unfortunately.
There were allegedly plans drawn up by BR for a double chimney for the Clans but we have been unable to find them yet, neither in our collection of drawings or those held at the NRM. I have an 'artists impression' mockup of a double chimney Clan and it suits it very well.

Disclaimer: we are NOT about to release news that we are going to use a double chimney. The 5AT presentation is only a start and actual performance and efficiency figures have yet to be calculated. Any future decision would have to be passed by our members at an AGM / EGM.

Doncaster Works Drawings Office drew up designs for double chimneys for the Class 5 4-6-0s and the Class 4 2-6-4 tanks. If Derby did any designs for a double chimney for the Clans, the drawings would be listed in the last volume of the Derby Works Drawings Office Registers at the NRM.

Double chimney on a Std 4 tank? I wonder if the NYMT fancy an experiment with 80135 ;-)
The drawing isn't in the Derby Works Office Registers. We even have a list of all documents pertaining to the Clans from the NRM Search Engine. Still no luck. The info came from a reliable ex-BR employee.

The Doncaster take on a (standard) Class 5 Double Chimney would make an interesting comparison with the LMS black 5 Double chimneys used. But as Dave says , if a choice is to be made, my preference would be a slim double than a wider single...

Yes Dave, just had a look at the NRM's listings. The last Derby Works Register, from 1957 into the 1960s, is absent from their archive.

Maybe the only double chimney Clan is part of the national reserve buried in a tunnel waiting for a chance to break out into the light... :D

Strange, I'd have thought it would look more rakish with a double chimney. Adding something visible which improves the power output usually does have a rakish feel to it. A weedy looking single chimney doesn't do it for me at all....:);)

I don't know... I think the weedy chimney on the Patriot and the Princess Royal classes looks quite out of the box and rad...

The first 3D CAD rendering courtesy of the 5AT group is now on the website (www.theclanproject.org). We have all the frame components shown. We also have (not shown) the rear frame extensions and gussets for the drag box. Only a few components remain to be sponsored and then it's assembly time!
