Passed by today and there were a pair of GWR tank locos stabled bunker to bunker.
One was green 5553, the other had black livery but I couldn't make out the number. Anyone know what I saw please?

The BR Standard 3 tank was nearby under a tarpaulin.

I'd imagine the second GW tank was 5224.It 'll be interesting to see what the future holds fro these now Pete Waterman no longer has a works - and bearing in mind that he didn't do much by way of overhauling them previously. I think he's probably lost interest and they'll be sold eventually. If you spotted a BR Class 3 tank there it must mean that the guys at Bridgnorth have been really cracking on!

What will happen with the Super D will that get done elsewhere as PW did say he would be repairing it and having control, now he doesn't have the works to fulfil this?
Anyone know the latest to a engine I and many others love to see in action?

Thanks for the replies and apologies for the typo, (it was after a day's travelling).

Since the flurry of comment after it was announced that Jeremy Hosking had acquired LNWR heritage little else appears to have been clarified. Thus, the questions about the future of the Waterman Heritage Trust locomotives and its sponsorship of the Super D overhaul appear to remain unanswered. Hopefully the 'hacks' from the 'mags' are on the case and will soon reveal all, I am not optimistic though!

Interestingly the Waterman Heritage Trust website has recently disappeared whilst that for Jeremy Hosking http://www.iconsofsteam.com/ still remains silent on the LNWR Heritage acquisition!

There are indications that LNWR Heritage are to relocate to the former Crewe Diesel Depot but no formal announcement as far as I am aware.

I read somewhere recently that DBS had vacated the depot and some civil works were due to commence in order to make it fit for the future intended use.

Indeed, part of this work includes the replacement of the entire roof.

This suggests that the loan to the Waterman Heritage Trust is to end. Presumably a statement to this effect will appear in due course and if it doesn't the 'mag hacks' will seek one from the NRM.

Not necessarily, though it does suggest that work won't start immediately. If the LNWR works are moving, and there are new arrangements to be made with either the new owners or another contractor, then it makes sense to put her on display somewhere out of the wind and rain - and where better than one of the NRM sites?

In regard to the two GW tank locomotives resident at the Crewe Heritage Centre, I was informed by both Steve Latham and David Shepherd in January 2013 that the black 2-8-0T 5224 had been sold to Jeremy Hosking.
As far as I am aware the Prairie Tank loco 5553 remains the property of the Waterman Heritage Trust, along with Thornbury Castle, The Class 46 'Ixion' and several other rail vehicles on the site.

In that case they were pulling your leg, no doubt the gentlemen in question walked off with a carefully hidden grin on their faces!

  14. I was at the West Somerset for the first time some ten years ago and photographed 5553 along with 5542 which were in steam that year. Pictures at:

    Peak Rail Press Release today

    Peak Rail
    PRESS RELEASE - 12 MAY 2015

Dr Pete Waterman OBE DL is delighted to announce that he has reached an agreement with Peak Rail to base his Waterman Railway Heritage Trust assets at its Rowsley site.

Over the coming months, Pete expects to announce exciting plans to overhaul his trust’s steam locomotives, return them to active steaming and in the process provide structured training opportunities for young people interested in a career in the railway industry.

It has always been Pete’s passion to see young people given the chance to learn engineering skills and over the last 30 years or so, he has provided such opportunities to dozens of people via apprenticeships.

Pete said “I have long been an admirer of Peak Rail and they were a natural choice for me when I decided to relocate from the Crewe Heritage Centre. In my time at Crewe, I’m proud to have created hundreds of skilled jobs by providing investment that
no-one else had the vision or foresight to do. I intend to work with Peak Rail to continue that tradition”.

What this means for CHC now is interesting

Well who'd have predicted that one? Hopefully it will provide some impetus and locos to PR in return.

Not many of us, I would think. I did read that Pete W. wanted a base where all his locos could operate together rather than hiring them out piecemeal to different lines and as he lives somewhere in the North West (Cheshire, did I read somewhere?) the natural assumption would be a line not to far away, but I didn't think of Peak Rail.

Seems like a GWR takeover with 4588 also now owned by someone connected with the line.

I wonder where that leaves the deal done with the SVR a few years back regarding 6634?

I seem to recall earlier threads where it was suggested that the relationship between him and the CHC was not as harmonious as people thought. With the sale of LNWR Heritage to Mr Hosking and the wider LNWR to DBS? the links to Crewe have all gone really.

The £627,000 that he raised in the recent auction will get the new venture off to a good start.
