There are a number of different records, but the employment records seem to be the latest and they end in 1956. (I found my great-great-grandfather, the pointsman on the Midland Railway in Leeds in 1871. :-D)

Is it possible to find out the names of any of the employees at the station, at any time?
We know the first stationmaster was Mr. Fifield. a nice local name. Anything you can find out would be of interest.

    Best regards,

    Hi Jo,

You have piqued my curiosity so I have renewed my Ancestry sub for one month. It is possible to do a search that lists all the GWR Broadway employees (I think). Thirty seven records show up but not the aforementioned great great aunt of my wife!!! If it helps I will see if I can save them as PDF or similar?

Is/was there another Broadway station down Gloucester/Bristol way? There appear to be references to such a place in the 1890s which of course is pre-GWSR Broadway station.

Most of the Ancestry records are pre-1904. There a few that might be of interest including a list of staff in 1906 but there must be a lot of records elsewhere.

I think not. A search of the 1911 using 'Broadway, Worcestershire" & Occupation 'Railway*' throws up 8 records.

That would be great ! Pasted into a word document would be best for me.
I have had a look at the list posted by Ken, although to view a file you need a subscription. The one name I recognise is that first stationmaster, G J Fifield. Are those dates by each name a date of birth?
The names of the two families I spoke to were Andrews and Jennings (both PWay men) but those names do not appear on the list. They were the last to live/work there though.
I am not aware of any other Broadways (except Ealing and New York!)

Is there anyone with a newspaper archive subscription? Perhaps you can find the bridge strike (possibly first half of 1975) or any other articles about the station. I have two articles in my possession, but out of a personal collection. One has two pictures of some trucks that ran away down the goodsyard. An elderly man with a bicycle was dispatched to clear up the 10T of coal that were scattered about :)

Sorry, I should probably have said it is possible to search for all GWR employees records that mention Broadway.

Shifting 10T by hand? Sounds like a typical Saturday for the average Broadway Group member :)

The dates by each name are the Residence Date, thus,
    Name: Maurice James Aldridge
    Birth Date: 5 Mar 1920
    Residence Date: 4 Mar 1935
    Age: 14
    Station: Broadway
    Company: Great Western

Nos.24751-25000 [c.1936-1937] Registers of drivers and firemen, showing date of entering service, promotions, type of work, fines etc.

Having trouble formatting here but the actual record shows him as a Lad Porter and then 1937 going to Worcester as an Engine Cleaner.

Ancestry Records are normally available free at most Libraries.

Looks like you've got some good answers there. I've found Mr Fifield's staff record as of 1910, which shows which stations he worked at up to his appointment as station master in July 1904 - at which point he got a pay rise to £110 pa.

Also, looking at the records for 1922, the staffing levels for the station were listed as
    1 Station Master
    1 General Clerk
    4 Porters
    1 Goods Checker
    3 Signalmen

but there are no names, as this is a list of the traffic staff needed, rather than staff records as such.

Perhaps this thread title should be changed to: "Broadway Station Bridge Repairs - The Gasps of Delight have started!"
Check out the incredible progress on the Blog linked here:

    http://bridgestobroadway.blogspot.c...are-coming-in-hard-and-fast.html#comment-form

The bracket signal installed on Monday affords an excellent view of progress for the Broadway Group photographer of progress on this bridge (which I thought would have to be completely renewed).

Indeed, 3 of the 5 bridges are being fettled right now. You don't need me to tell you what to do with any spare money you have!

Unless you filter carefully you may also get all those that worked at Ealing Broadway etc.

It almost a full time job keeping up with the various blogs reporting the excellent progress at Broadway! The bracket signal looks fantastic though :)

As an aside, if there is anyone local to Broadway on the forum, please keep using and supporting Station Road Garage (next to the station site) as they are being adversely affected by the bridge repairs, associated road closure and loss of passing trade. Given the closure of one the banks in Broadway this week it'd be a shame to lose the garage as well.

I got caught up in the inconvenience of the bridge closure this week when I visited GWR. I was delayed for all of 3-4 minutes by the diversion.
