I completely missed what has happened to the original inside cylinder. Would anyone be kind enough to summerise what went wrong? Just curious

I think im right in saying that on the first one during the cooling Process the centre became egg shaped. This meant extra machining to become round again. And that meant that the stud holes were too close to the edge. There was talk about a liner being put in but the cost was a lot and it also wouldnt be able to do more than 25mph. And of course thats no good to us. So the second one was done at an extremely good price. Since then we have "beefed" up our patterns and slightly changed the grade of iron i believe. Kevin west knows far better than me and im no engineer so im sure some of my terms are incorrect. But i hope it makes sort of sense.

Many thanks for taking the time to answer. Much kudos to the group for taking the brave decision to go again and not try to rework something that isn't ever going to be right

20140719_162408.jpg 20140719_162448.jpg A couple of pictures of progress.

First one from our members day yesterday

And the other is i believe the first time that all 3 cylinders for the Pat have been seen together.

And the final image is of the copper at Crewe starting to take shape! I know there are some on this forum that even now still say "if anyone actually builds a copper box" well i hope this picture proves that we are!

Great to see so many component parts in one photo along with the frames, the progress so far is little short of unbelievable ! once the cylinders are fully machined and fitted I would imagine that progress will be just as swift, as when you are bolting 'big bits' on, it will appear to be even quicker.
Gutted I was not able to attend, but do try not to finish it before next year, as I do want to see her being assembled !!! ;)
    Well done.

Hmm next year.... as youll more than likely know we will be taking the engine away from Llan for 7 ish days to GDSF. We have no current plans to leave again from then till members day next year. Sooo what could be different for you... cylinders fitted, motion brackets, girders also fitted. Possible chance of being a 4-6-0 if the second wheelset is back in time for tyseley to assemble. More pictures of work on the copper box which should also be complete by then. So plenty to see next year during the "construction" phase.

    Cheers Gavin

Just reading the latest updates in Rly Herald regarding the:

'First all-new standard gauge British-built steam locomotive to be entirely built in Britain since 1960'

I thought this statement is a bit sh**ty considering the pioneering work done by the A1 Locomotive Trust. I don't think this sort of marketing will do them any favours..

Yes, where does the arsenical copper come from, and the tyres for the wheels.

To see those cylinder blocks assembled in front of the chassis and smokebox. Marvelous. And while the boiler is the big-ticket item, there's no denying that the build is progressing exceptionally well. Everyone concerned should take a bow!

Well, like it or not, this locomotive is and will be 'Entirely British built'. It is a PATRIOT is it not, component material is irrelevant, as are individual items not able to be produced in the UK for whatever reason, nothing sh**ty about it, except maybe your attitude .

Also, it is not all-new, as stated.

Having not seen said article in RH was it written by the Lms Patriot project? Or was it written by RH writers?

And yes i can see where your coming from, but it is being built in the Uk. The only exceptions are tyres and axles. And its also wrong in the statement of all new. So im doubting this was written by us. In which case can you please direct your line of fire at RH. Our project does not wish to offend any others as we have very close ties with many of the groups. And of course we understand the pioneering work done by A1, just as much as the pioneering work done by 71000 in its day. With out these sorts of projects many wouldnt of had the belief to persist.

If A1, P2 etc etc choose to build parts abroad then thats their choice. It doesnt make them better or worse. We went for Crewe for the reasons of a good quote, we wanted a uk boiler and to have the name Crewe where 40 of the 52 were originally built. And we also feel that by building in the Uk we are keeping the skills alive for future generations.

    Kind regards Gavin

And that statement conveniently ignores several Austerity tanks built by Hunslet, plus all the Locomotion Enterprises/Mike Satow/Beamish etc built machines.

Thankyou Knotty. One day a George and a Pat double heading may be possible. Many of our group would love to see that.

    Kind regards Gavin

We're looking forward to it - I know the prospect excites our group. Before that happens I'm keen to see a Patriot take to the rails. What a sight that'll be! I donated some time ago and I really should make a contribution to the boiler.

Perhaps in about 10 years given the number of new builds that will come to fruition in that time, perhaps we'll see them collected in one place for a special occasion.

I agree, this statement should have maybe been updated, as they were unaware at the time that the Jubilee motion parts and other items would become available, this has been one of the selling points of the LMS Patriot Project for a number of years, also they didn't recon on Mr Std tank getting on their case did they ! ;)
These are my own views expressed and not of the LMS Patriot Project ( as far as I am aware )?
