This is how the photograph would have looked had 35028 'Clan Line' and 60163 'Tornado' passed at Byfleet and New Haw earlier this afternoon... as it was, 35028 appeared about 90 seconds after 60163 passed Byfleet. Ignore the edit line, I'll re-edit this when I'm not packing for a holiday AND getting ready for work!

What an excellent video, despite the preponderance of oilers!

'timing is everything' , ' right place right time' and other assorted clichés.

I'm guessing that this was filmed from the foot crossing just up from Cox's Lock?

Fine job - keep it up

Love the slow-mo on the video!

Not quite as special on the return to Victoria but I did employ Canon's revolutionary new diesel lens filter, which worked wonders.

Correct, there were only two possible places to see this, BFH station, or the foot crossing further on. As RTT was constantly showing the Tornado train edging up on the clock, I went for the further option. Bang on as it turned out.

I was some distance away (using a long lens) but the gentleman in spectacles striding towards the camera appeared to tell this couple a few seconds later what a bad idea this was and told them to remove their child from the engine:

And that, in my view Ian, is exactly what he should have said. And knowing who it is you are talking about you'd be hard pushed to find anyone in the MNLPS with a better understanding of what can and should be done, when and where.

Quite. Even as a "layman" I could see it was not the thing for them to do. I only spotted it through the viewfinder at the last second and was glad when he almost immediately intervened.

Sadly I cannot quote the full content of the original post as I have been singled out for censure for daring to mention the name of this fire test in an earlier post. The test whose first word starts with an S, and ends with a word starting with an E.

But I can applaud the test being carried out with such scientifically proven methods. Initially giving a positive result re the damp grass. But then.............. LOL!

    Brilliant!

    Thank you muchly.

What a nonsense - 35028 and TWO 67s! Why on earth was the rear diesel even there? The BP frequently runs with 35028 at the front and that's all, so why have a diesel tucked inside AND another at the back? How much insurance can one train need?! NR and the TOCs bleat on about how they take green issues seriously, so why cart over 200 tons of locos around SE England for no good reason - the ground was wet for at least 90% of the route. NR seems to have the reaction time of an oil tanker regarding weather conditions.

I too was initially sceptical and dismissive of NR for what appeared to be an excessively cautious approach. My fire test was a bit of fun, BUT I was surprised that it burned as well as it did, and then standing on the trackside, there was a lot of brown dry combustible ferns so a fire was a distinct possibility, and diesel power with steam for show was a good idea.
Now given that a diesel and crew was needed to get Clan Line into and out of Victoria, and a diesel and crew was needed for the journey, it made economic and operational sense to just roster One Crew and two diesels (and carry your extra diesel around with you) rather than roster two crews, two diesels and pay for two extra positioning movements.

And it made for something different.

Yes. I am a pure steam guy. But I do enjoy looking at some types of photos of other sorts of traction. Big Brother D does those very well. So when something different comes along that has a steam loco involved still, I feel that can make for some interest. Part of the scene that our beloved steam locos have to work in during 2014.
