Right, I've just got back from putting a shift in!

    Jeez, were it hot.....

I Had a shufty at Ropley first thing, as of 8am this morning The Std5, N & U were in the head shunt, and the 31806 cold in the yard, I took some, what may prove to be final, pic's :) though it may have changed...

BUT I've asked (by the railway) not to post any on line out of respect to all parties due to adverse/negative comments being aimed at the railway until all of JB's loco's have left the line.

So to those of you on here with PTS, PLEASE respect the railway's wishes and do not post any pics on here!

I also know when some of the loco's are due to leave, again at the request of the railway I cannot say - so please don't ask! ;)

Again with respect to all parties, could I ask anyone on here who has dealings with Ropley, and also knows NOT to say anything!

    THANK YOU!! :)

According to the article in the latest issue of Steam Railway. 41312 and 76017 could return to steam towards the end of this year or early next year.

Sorry Green Five, but this at the request of the MHR who have been receiving no amount of grief on various social media by people who have no clear understanding of whats happened, SO no its not Colditz or Carnforth, just the MHR wanting some peace & quiet - and me posting pictures of rather forlorn loco's may exacerbate the situation.................. after all the loco's are nothing to do with the MHR, they are privately owned.................... so why should the MHR take all the grief for another parties actions/indiscretions/desperation?...........

How would you like it if you were bombarded by various means whilst trying to do your job? You wouldn't would you?...........................

At the end of the day I don't want to rock the boat, which is why I put the above plea on here on behalf of the MHR! ;)

Oh, and remember that recent joint statement from the MHR & NRM regarding Nellie?....................................................

That was caused by one Eijit with too much time on their hands posting unsubstantiated remarks on social media which the railway mags picked up on, and the MD at the MHR and his counterpart at the NRM spent several hours of their day fending off the news hungry Journo's from said mags, when their time would've been better spent trying to run their respective organisations!!

So now maybe you can understand why the MHR would rather things were kept quiet?............. So most certainly NOT Colditz/Carnforth!

I hope that lowers your eyebrows from their raised position! ;):)

Good, I'm glad you now understand the situation! Because I didn't either, like you I haven't got time to trawl for all that....

As for face ache etc, including this forum, you now understand the way social media can have a seriously negative impact on things - people can be too over reactionary and jump the gun all too quickly..........

And no, I wasn't "asked" to write the post I did, BUT having had several conversations with the MHR MD today, refering to the above, I asked if it would be OK to post pic's from today............... he had to think before replying, so given recent events, it is best that things aren't published for all concerned - ie if I'm asked not to publish things then a plea on behalf of the railway is the only sensible thing to do - and I hope that those to whom my post was intended heed that advice, tempting as it is to do otherwise..................

    Druid,

Thanks for the explanation and clarifying the situation, which is totally understandable. It's disappointing to think that despite all the positive news regarding the locos, I.e. their operational future, the MHR are getting grief. It's unfortunate the situation developed in the first place but that's now in the past and we should look to the future. The MHR has amassed a fine Southern Region fleet to replace John's locos and it would seem there's a future for all his fleet too. I for one am very much looking forward to double-headed moguls through the Purbeck countryside in the future, as well as BR Standards, S15s and an Ivatt over the Alps.

The MHR need thanking for allowing many of us the chance to experience 31806 in operation right across the country. It's been allowed out and about to railways on many occasions in the last few years and this has been great.

Hopefully once the moves have been completed and the dust settle, this can all be forgotten about. In the meantime, let's look forward to the many restorations/overhauls now underway at Ropley as well as the return to traffic of 31874 and 31265.

    Matt

Are you surprised by this? Could the railway have not seen it coming? No railway is perfect, but the photos of Bodmin show that she has been completely neglected by the railway. You all knew it would be leaving, and leaving publicly, so why not pay it some attention, give it a clean and at least make it at least look respectable, after all, its not your loco.

I think everyone will be pleased when the JB/MHR saga is over, I just hope that even at this stage the MHR can learn from their mistakes. How about a nice shiny BR class 5 leaving the railway?

<<Edited by Moderator>>. it was down to JB to do something to cover up his loco's NOT the MHR! The railway IIRC could not do anything with his charges without his say so.

So, no the MHR isn't at fault in this inst, <<Edited by Moderator: along the lines of : please consider what you write as false information hurts the railway, consider the recent statement about 850>>

Dont give the MHR ideas ;-)

On a serious note, was reading a book on the S15s and it said that 499 has the only remaining Urie boiler and 506 has the only original Urie tender is that still the case?

Wasn't it a case that the boiler on 499 at Barry was overhauled for 506 last time around? Not sure which boiler is being used for which engine this time around though. With three boiler and two locos, it gets slightly confusing!

I believe the tender behind 847 (which was originally behind 828) is a Urie tender in which the tank has been converted to Maunsell straight sided pattern. The axle box covers are stamped SR though, rather than LSW, but at this remove that's not much of a guide.

    Thanks Tom

The book I was reading is from the 80s and very out of date when it comes to the preserved locos

    Tom,
I think you'll find it was Urie pattern SR tender rather than a Urie tender itself. The original Urie design tender was built for the Southern engines initially, until the later batches of S15 were built. 847 was 828s tender, with the later type of straight sides, 828 has 830s tender, with the Urie type sides, while 825 has 841s tender, which should now have the sides changed to Urie pattern. 506 has a genuine Urie tender I believe, and 499 will I think have a genuine Urie tender rebuilt too. What tender 830 will ever end up with depends on what happens with her, based on whats happened with 825, it'll probably be wrong!
