OK, so who would be interested? It could use a Britannia or 9F boiler. Anyway, we can have fun discussing the exact spec :) (And colour!) . Maybe we could even set up an Internet page :D

Personally I'd like it to follow the drawing on the cover of "Loco Panorama vol 2" by E. S. Cox. But with roller bearings and a decent blastpipe.

It could just have been the most useful engine built for the British main lines ever. (Not the best that could ever have been built starting with a blank piece of paper - that would have had to have had more Chapelon/Porta in it)

Incidentally, the main reason it wasn't built and the 9F's were built instead was the continued existence of the Victorian four wheeled unbraked goods wagon. That and Riddles was inordinately proud of his Austerity 2-10-0's :)

tongue in cheek I assume?.... you could achieve something similar with a 9F rebuild and it might be allowed on the mainline.

Presumably the idea being to allow a wider, deeper firebox to address the supposed inadequacies of the 9F boiler? If so why not go the whole hog and allow a decent combustion chamber too, probably need a 4 wheel pony truck to support that, might as well increase the size of the driving wheels now there is less height restriction ... and how about a 4 wheel front bogie for better stability at speed? Et Voila; a British 'Super-power' 4-8-4 :)

    No, I'm not serious either ... :)

This may be only a pipedream. But then again, several projects that are now making good progress would have been dismissed as pipedreams not so long ago. So never say "never".

The least unlikely way for this one to go ahead would be by the rebuilding of an existing 9F to allow it to go on the main line. That could actually be a fairly minor rebuild (therefore not fiendishly expensive) and with a very specific practical purpose (therefore worth doing). For the purposes of main line certification it would be regarded as a new design, but the P2 project has shown how to approach that.

Why would unbraked wagons point towards a 2-10-0 rather than a 2-8-2? I can see that conceivably the braking on a 2-10-0 may be marginally better, but if that was the only reason, and in other respects a 2-8-2 held advantages, then surely there would have been other ways to tackle that problem of hauling very heavy freight trains?

Don't worry, the new build project for one of those is already covered, just as soon as Euromillions stop fannying about and pay me my rightful dues...

    Anyway, thread drift. :focus:

I've always been a fan of the big Brighton tanks...despite having GWR right through me like a stick of rock

Pacifics always have the reputation of being light on their feet, would a 2-8-2 share this trait?

I've seen quite a bit of German 2-8-2 action and I can't recall the 41s slipping much at all.

Always thought it was due to 10 driven wheels having more adhesive weight over them rather than having some carried by the trailing wheels on a 2-8-2

A 9F has two 10-1/2" dia steam brake cylinders on the loco, thus increasing the loco braking power quite considerably. I would presume that a 2-8-2 would have a 12" dia steam brake cylinder, similar to a Stanier 8F.

Probably be air-braked these days, as per Tornado and the P2. (5At Group keeping a watching brief on developments here ;) )

In fairness Tom, you could kill two bird with one stone in emulating the 2999 lot.... and make it convertible to being an N15X....

Why build new, 3 still exist, one of the few types if not the only type that came out of Barry and none have yet steamed!
