The only way to retain some element of steam working, given the blanket ban in the York area.

Is the 8f booked to return back to Hellifield on todays Waverley, just checking as I've read conflicting reports.

    Thanks for the help.

8F left Carlisle bound for Hellifield with the 47 tucked inside.

Any reason for the 47 behind the 8f Ian as it can't be down to a fire risk surely as it has peed down for the last two days !

I was disappointed to see the 47 tucked inside at Armathwaite Stephen. Only reason I can think of is for ease of shunting at Hellifield, but that's my stab in the dark.

Seems odd as the support coach would still be in the mix somewhere but like you say perhaps for shunting maybe .

Probably the Pob was the rear coach and could be detached at Hellifield with 48151 taking it back home.?

    Hi all,

I am booked with the family to go on the Waverley this Sunday(10th August) as a VERY one-off treat for my sons birthday; although from a family of train enthusiasts we never do rail-tours like this, as mainly the obscene price puts us off! You can get 6/7 good heritage days out for the price of one day tour!

I've had quite alot of conflicting info about what engine will actually be taking us. The operator tell me it will be Steam throughout(Scot or 8f), but a bit of inadvertent delving around on you-tube and forums tells me otherwise. It would be a BIG disappointment if it was a 47/37 etc even for some of the way when I've paid £180 for a ticket!

I understand there is a steam ban in the York area, is this likely to be in place still for this weekend? The person on the phone at RTC is very vague on this, and just kept rattling on about fireman strikes. I would have thought if there is a steam ban for some of the journey then they really should be letting people know about it, rather than just claiming there might be a last minute fireman strike!

Looking at You-tube, it looks to have been diesel assisted even for the S/C section for the past few weeks; is this a back-up in case the engine fails, or just standard practice.

I really don't want the whole thing to be a big disappointment!

    Any advice gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Phil

Sunday could be diesel hauled all the way from York to Carlisle as the firefighters strike kicks in from 12 noon to 2pm .

Just to confuse matters, the local weather forecasts are predicting rain before the weekend and cloudy sun for the weekend. Rest assured that if steam is possible WCRC will try their best to provide it even if only on the S&C.

Phil B--- well the SSE tomorrow is diesel due to the 'unusually dry conditions' which I think is disappointing though a steam/diesel combo might have been reasonable. But added to that is the firemens strike. Obviously I don't know where you live or your personal circumstances but if there is any possibility of postponing to Aug 24/31/ Sept 7, I would consider that. I feel that the season over here is only going to kick off on Aug 17 or 19 and that's assuming more rain. Sorry.

I was booked for the first trip - and they moved it to the 31st August - they did advise they wouldn't normally - but were fairly reasonable given the circumstances.
