I don't understand why the complexity of having three systems. Surely much easier to make a full air brake conversion, including brake cylinder and add a vacuum system and proportional valve for those rare days out on the mainland. See this thread for some relevant points.

See the positive comments about 6233 and s160s.

Just to confirm that 41298 successfully passed the boiler inspector's 'in steam' examination today and to let you all know that more pictures, including footplate views (of the brake valve!) are now available on the IWSR website.

41298 won't be in steam over the Bank Holiday Island Steam Show, although W24 and W8 will be. When you've had enough of watching the trains there are 54 Real Ales available in the beer tent - see you there!

Currently carrying 71G - Weymouth I think. IMG_0344.JPG Seen at the end of the day yesterday when she was being "warmed through" and Calbourne was just coming off duty.

excellent news re 41298! well done to all involved!
if you have a look at gary's flickr site 41298 already has the westinghouse pump fitted.
there are quite a few of the Terriers dual braked, plus i think the Austerities on the IW still have their vacuum gear as well as westinghouse pumps etc.
    cheers,
    julian

Silly question, but why is there a rubber duck adorning the smokebox?

41298 carries an Aylesbury Duck mascot, a reminder of time spent in Buckinghamshire

As do a few GER-designed locos, 69621 for instance. I think all of those locos have air brakes on the loco, with a proportional valve much like the various vacuum/steam proportional valves for when the vacuum ejector is in use. The air and vacuum brake valves are entirely separate. A double check valve between the triple valve, proportional valve and brake cylinder ensures that if either brake is applied then the loco brake is on.

I suspect for 41298 the answer is something like a Westinghouse brake valve, an air/steam proportional valve, and a double check valve between the proportional valve and the steam portion of the LMS combined vac/steam valve. Not complicated at all!

On a system like 60163 has, which is basically from a 37, there's a single air brake valve (with vacuum emergency section), an air/vacuum relay valve, a distributor with air and vacuum control sections, and a double check valve between the distributor, straight air brake valve and brake cylinder. So maybe 41298 doesn't look so over the top after all. Anyway, it'll be good to see her in service. Nice engines, those Ivatts, I prefer the look of them to the BR version.

Time for a livery debate: aren't Aylesbury Ducks supposed to be white? ;)

When adult certainly. The juveniles are, I think, yellow.

I think at 60-odd years old, she's definitely not a juvenile!

I know it's some way off yet, but is there likely to be a launch event or weekend planned for 41298 ?

i dont expect it will be until next year, it still has to be finished off, painted , lined out, not exactly short jobs, i dont think they will plan to need her before next year anyway, the peak season is going to be running down in the next month, that leaves the santas, i think you will see her running in early part of 2015 , with a launch spring time, most likily Easter?

Thanks for your thoughts, I really don't mind how far off it is, when a loco returns to steam after 47 years it's certainly something to see.
I guess I'm not the only one, it should also bring in some useful revenue for the railway.
I visited earlier in August at the Victorian Weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the visit, the Train Story's an excellent achievement too!

Islander, do you know if Peter and Roy are planning to go to Cranmore for the launch of 46447?

I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to that one.
